Hi everyone,

I wanted to stop in here and answer some of the questions being circulated on this and other threads about the factory PPF options.

Q. Do the factory installations include paint correction and/or decontamination?

A. No. When the film is installed at the factory location, it is being applied on clean virgin paint that has never been outside in the elements. It is inspected first by Rivian in a light tunnel at the end of the production line, and then again by the installation team at our facility. If at either stage, a defect is found that would impact the installation in any way, the vehicle is sent back for this to be corrected before installation.

Doing the installation at an XPEL dealer is a different story altogether. In these cases, the vehicle has been out on the road or in the elements and will often need some level of decontamination or correction before installing the film. The cost for this will vary, depending on the dealer and amount of work needed.

Q. Are the edges wrapped on the factory options?

A. Edges that are accessible without requiring disassembly of the vehicle are wrapped. Edges that are not accessible without disassembly are not. For example, all the hood edges are wrapped, but the top of the bed rails is not since it would require removing the bed rail caps to access this area.

Q. Are the Rivian badges removed to install the factory PPF?

A. Yes. New badges are to be applied over the film after the installation is complete using a jig to ensure proper location and spacing. We are currently trying to obtain extra badges for the installations related to this program that are being performed by XPEL dealers in the field as well, but currently the badges are in very short supply. I will update this thread when this changes.

In the meantime, it is completely understandable that XPEL dealers will need to charge extra to remove and reapply the badges. This is a very time consuming process that requires removing the old adhesive tape, cutting and reinstalling new badge tape, and carefully reapply the letters back in the same locations while managing to get them straight and evenly spaced.

Q. When will the factory option be available?

A. We are currently targeting October for start of production.

Let me know if I missed any of your questions.

Thanks for this, Tim. Is a similar program for the R1S in the pipeline? If so, when do you anticipate that will be available?

Thanks Tim! One question that has been swirling is how the Stealth PPF will be cut around the emblems for non-factory installation. It has been reported that it is cut as a square around the emblems so you would clearly see shiny vs matte. Also, areas that you can't wrap the edges, will the PPF go right up to the edge so you don't see shiny bits on the edges?

Had the front done at Xpel SA. It does go right to the edges of each panel. Very small area not wrapped around edge but won't notice it unless you are 1 foot away.

I'd expect a factory program for wrapping the vehicle would just mean they toss the badges in the vehicle somewhere instead of installing them. Seems very wasteful to remove and replace them and anti to the Rivian ethos.

Interesting. The quote I received through the Rivian program made it clear that badges would NOT be removed, and the template provided by XPEL simply had cutouts to go over the badges.

Thanks for the info Tim, it's great to get official answers!

One question if you don't mind is regarding the warranty. From what we are hearing from installers the warranty is for a period of 5 years instead of the usual 10 years from XPEL. Is this true and if so is there a particular reason for the difference?

My dealer said the XPEL templates had cutouts that went around the badges.

Can you confirm/deny?

Totally understand your point of view, and we would like that as well. However, it is much more complicated that you might imagine to change things like this on a complex assembly line. Sometimes the juice isn't worth the squeeze.

I only went with partial front, but Xpel used the Rivian patterns and can confirm that the hood emblem is not removed. it is a cutout that goes right to the edges of the indentation.

I can't speak to the info Rivian sent to you, but I can definitely tell you without a doubt that the templates in our system for the factory program have no cutouts for the badges.

Thanks for answering the questions.

With the factory option I understand several logistics come into play on both sides of this, but would Rivian be able to leave off the badges on vehicles "built to order" that have a full stealth PPF associated with said order, thus saving time and importantly money for both you and Rivian by not having to apply, remove, obtain replacement, re apply? Or does it just complicate things in an already stained backlog of orders?

Any chance we'll see a full wrap with the glossy option? Those of us planning to off-road the truck want to see this offered vs only the stealth for a full wrap.

If the hood pattern the installer used had a cutout for the emblem, they used the standard XPEL design, not the OEM design. You can see the difference in these patterns by going to:

https://www.xpel.com/paint-protecti...enger-Cars--AND--Light-Trucks/2022/Rivian/R1T

From there you can choose "OEM PPF Package" or "Standard XPEL Coverage" from the Submodel dropdown.
