I think they have already indicated their future product line will include smaller offerings.

Perhaps I was confusing rally with rallycross?
Rallycross are rally cars on a closed circuit. You might be envisioning some of the more extreme Rallys like Baja which require heavily modified vehicles. Most are designed to use modified production cars.

Cool! The renderings of the Rally are not my style at all...Hopefully they have further offering that are little more sleek and a little less teenager/RC car style...:). Audi/Model S/Porsche/Ferrari would be my preferred design directions lol

They've actually confirmed in a recent Wired article that a "smaller SUV" will be coming. They'll probably add the Rally car as they fill out their production capacity and then two more affordable options once they've got the factory closer to full capacity. I hope they also do a compact pickup or a lifted wagon.

Do you really want to be blasting around in 2-3 ton truck or in a 1 - 2 ton crossover?
For comparison, the Mustang Mach-E weighs 2.2 tons, and it is a CUV - not a big vehicle at all. With today's technology, it will be difficult for any BEV with decent range to weigh less than 2 tons, IMO. For that we probably have to wait for solid state batteries.

Rivian is focusing on the right market segment to be successful, because even with all the recent BEV reveals, they still have a unique product that is differentiated enough to make it very market leading in many respects. Especially in range with the max pack. Nobody else (forget Tesla for a second, because I will believe it when they build it) is preparing to sell a truck that has over 400 miles of range and is off road capable like the R1T. And nobody else has tank turn! So what else do you need if you have tank turn???

Only my opinion, but I think Rivian should forget the Rally, and make the Amazon delivery van for the consumer market. I see the mod'd Sprinters and others - really the only ICE vehicle I would consider. And they already have the tooling...we'll see.

For the consumer market, I'd like to see a version with more ground clearance, 4 independent motors, long range, & a modular interior that could accommodate:
1) High capacity seating
2) Sleeping arrangements
3) Indoor/outdoor camp kitchen option (back door swing out?)
4) Slide up/out roof for additional sleeping

It could literally be the ultimate adventure camping rig...so many design possibilities.

That could be a huge win for Rivian to come out with at least a dual-motor, high capacity battery Class B RV.

There is so much room for a gear tunnel w/ camp kitchen accessory, indoor full bath, and an outdoor shower. Higher ground clearance would be even better. RV sales during the pandemic were 4.5%. The outlook for 2021 has sales up 19.5%. What an opportunity for Rivian to add a Class B to their portfolio and punch through to another market...

If they come out with a quad-motor van with a smart interior in a few years, I would buy one in a sec...Always wanted a 4wd van, and as an EV would seriously rock...

The market for a "Rally" or stationwagon type thing is a bit more crowded w/ other EV's coming the market. The Van would be a unicorn. Fingers crossed seeing it in 3-4 years.

A Rivian camper van, inspired by their Amazon deliver trucks and the R1 vehicles, would be fantastic! We wouldn't utilize one of those for a number of years.

In the meantime, we would love a Rivian-developed station wagon/crosstrek/rally car, which is something we would buy not too long after an R1S.

I hope Rivian has plans for both kinds of vehicles for all of our near-term desires!

I emailed Rivian customer service about 3 more affordable ideas than the R1S/R1T I would like to see...
1) Rivian Rally Wagon (essentially and Outback or Rav4 competitor)
2) Adventure/Overland Van
3) Short Range (<40mile range) Street Legal, neighborhood vehicle (essentially a golf cart that has an upper speed limit of 60 mph)

This was Rivian's response:

"Good morning Nathan,

Glad to hear back from you, I hope you’re having a great week! We are focused and hard at work on the launch of our R1T and R1S this summer. Alongside the production of our RPV, we are right on track to release three new vehicles in 2021, that is quite the feat!

I can see you are looking to the future of what Rivian could be and I like where your head is at! We can’t wait to share the new concepts and models that will be available as the years go on, we have very big plans around here. More affordable, shorter-range vehicles are something that we plan on releasing more info on later this year, keep an eye on your inbox for a newsletter detailing what is to come for Rivian. Feel free to reach out with any questions you might have, we can’t wait to get you behind the wheel of a Rivian of your very own. Have a great day and stay adventurous!

Your fellow adventurer,
Ryan"

That's exactly what I think every time I see one of the ICE amazon vans. I'd want the BEV van.

I thought they would call their two row SUV the R1C for crossover or compact.
