Hi All,

Long time lurker but figured it was time to make an appearance. I’m in Edmonton and am still waiting on final prices/timing/charging/options before I put my money done. I’m super into rivian just not sure that 2020-1 will be best time to buy.

Just joined today from way out east in Halifax, NS. I recently retired from the navy, exchanging life in uniform to become a stay-at-home dad. I put a fair bit more miles on my Chevy Suburban these days and can't wait to make the jump to electric. My father-in-law has a Tesla Model S which I got to drive for a week. I was blown away at the performance of that ride but the sedan just doesn't fit our family needs. The R1S is exactly what I was hoping to find. Until very recently I was thinking that VW's ID Buzz (in 2022) was the only other 'fit' for us on the horizon. Rivian's R1S definitely has my attention - and probably a $1000 USD deposit pretty soon.....
Hey salty! Funny, I am ex CAF as well, retired after 20 last year to take care of my 3 young children for a few years. Gave my deposit for an R1S last feb to hopefully replace my minivan soon...

Just out of curiosity for us Canadians.... How much do you expect the midline R1S to be after exchange? I feel like the sticker shock after exchange conversion is going to make me second guess the extreme enthusiasm I currently hold. I think for me 100K would be my threshold. Any other thoughts?

So midline is expected to be $79k USD? So at least $110k Canadian?

I’d love Rivian to announce definitive pricing soon.

Me too... I'd like to see the price after building my R1S.... I know we are all waiting to do that. Guess we will have to wait until the end of the year.

I live 5 or 5-1/2 months of each year in Quebec so I guess I qualify. In QC the charging situation is pretty good. In trying to get a handle on what the Rivian might be like up here I have been venturing out into the countryside where the Tesla chargers are pretty thin. flo/CircuitElectrique seem to have the province pretty well covered. The only potential problem is that the DC "fast" chargers seem to be limited to 50 kW. The Rivians are going to drink about 450 Wh/mi and thus to add 100 miles (162 km) range is going to take around 45/50 = 0.9 hr. For comparison my Tesla Model X takes about 300 wH/mi and thus adds that same 100 mi range in 30/50 = 0.6 hr. Not, IMO, that much difference really. The reality of travel with a BEV is drive a couple of hours, charge a few minutes, drive a couple of hours more, charge a few minutes... This is fine with me for the kind of leisurely driving I like to do but I realize it may not be so appealing to those who need to get from point A to point B as fast as possible. Perhaps at this point a BEV is not the best choice for such people. In the States there are programs underway to get more high power (> 100 kW) chargers insralled. Don't know about up here.

Petro Canada is rolling out their new Electric Hwy coast to coast with 200 kw chargers for now , but upgradable to 300kw in the future

This is a plus, of course, and eventually, as the fleet comes to include more vehicles that will accept charge at higher rates I am sure Petro Canada (and EV America) will up the power available from their chargers. Currently the limit seems to be about 100 kW.

Right now Petro has 8 stations shown as working a mariusque ad mare and, at least in Quebec, it seems that the Circuit Electrique CCS/Chademo stations limited to 50 kW is where you go if you are not a Tesla driver. It's going to be a while before there is a network of chargers across Canada (or the US) that supports fast charging of cars other than Telsas. Of course it is going to be a while before there are a lot of cars, other than Tesla, on the roads that can accept fast charging. I am certain that though there may be some inconvenience at first things will eventually work out to everyone's satisfaction. I do NOT think the current state of affairs and the minor inconveniences it implies should discourage people from ordering vehicles like the Rivians in Canada or the US.

I forgot the most important thing. Go to Abetterrouteplanner.com and try a few of your own trips. In it's last upgrade it added alpha models for the R1T and R1S vehicles. If the Rivian is to be your first BEV then there will be lots for you to try and learn. If you have been driving a BEV you will be familiar with how things work.

Note that ABRP is pessimistic about consumption using 1.94 mi/kWh as its default (you can change that to play around). "Over 400 hundred miles" with a 180 kWh battery suggests more than 2.22 mi/kWh. The 1.94 number is estimated for 65 mpH by the program.

Hello all - just wondering how many Canadians are on this group thus far, since they took the time to create a Canadian sub-group?
Looks a fair amount so far have joined from Canada.
Does anyone know when the vehicles will be touring Canada? I would love to get a real world look and feel of the space inside the vehicle.

Also... Have they tested these in Canadian Winter's yet? Or even Alaska?

I am on the Wet Coast. I recently put my deposit on a R1T. Based on the reading above and our lousy canadian dollar, I am hoping I can afford it when it is finally ready for purchase. Add to that the crazy insurance prices in BC and...yikes! Fingers crossed I can afford one because I am super jazzed to be inline for 1.

R1T pre-order in Feb 2019 (gotta include the year now!). I was looking at the truck back in Nov shortly after the reveal, even had a pre-order in my "shopping cart" at the time, but thought Rivian was making unbelievable claims. Clearly I was convinced otherwise :)

In Canadian news, I'm super excited to see the Petro Canada DCFC network rolling out that has provides a properly high power output (the BC Hydro stations are limited to 50kW at best). There's actually a station not 20 minutes away from I live and it looks very nice!
