Culture starts at the top & I think both companies somewhat reflect their leaders.

Elon is brilliant but a little all over the place, while RJ has a quiet confidence & has instilled that Rivian should meet or exceed deadlines & expectations.

Too early to tell if Rivian will be able to deliver on targets, but I feel much more confident in their ability to do it versus Tesla...

I agree about the appearance of EM and RJ.

I would be curious to see how Rivian would do if they announced a model and by the time they had the line setup to build it had 500,000 pre-orders. That’s what happened to Tesla with the Model 3. Shoot for even how polarizing the Cybertruck is Tesla has over 200k Pre-orders and 83% are the top two models. Now even if we assume the normal rates of cancellation we still talking 140k. I would love for Rivian to announce how many they have for both models. Hopefully they will in time.

My guess is that they have more preorders than a year's manufacturing capacity, and don't want to let that out of the bag yet.

I bet they wait to see how many commit to configurations, and what configs those end up to be.

Based on the press release today it looks like Lincoln will be selling their EV before or the same time as the Rivian using the same skateboard. So clearly they have enough room in the line. I wonder if that is what the money from Ford was for the skateboard line.

So...what’s the guesstimate on how many new Rivian orders result from that ... reveal. Watching the YouTube comments stream by as the event unfolded was hilarious. And that production photo of the rip-off gear tunnel campstove was a nice touch. How original. Yes, it costs less, but com’on.
Has Rivian ever announce preorder numbers recently?

Doubtful, but they also aren’t traded publicly
I understand why companies don’t go public for a lot longer. But it’s not great for the average investor. As most of the major growth has happened so stocks don’t grow as much.

I pre-ordered my R1S back in April, but I also took a run at the Cybertruck and pre-ordered the dual motor a minute after Elon announced the pre-order web address...so I’m pretty early in line.

My biggest Rivian question is what will the actual selling price of the early R1S’s be? Are they going to be optioned in a way that they will attempt to force us to spend nearly $100,000? I’m not prepared to spend that much on a first model run (not have I ever spent that much on any car), and it would effectively push me to cancel.

Compare that to the cyber truck. One less seat, polarizing looks (I’ve personally gone from “WTF is that a joke?!?!” to it legitimately growing on me), and a price that I presume will be meaningfully less - even after paying for FSD. I’m not certain that I could actually pull the trigger and drive it as a daily, but time will tell.

All this being said, I can almost convince myself that the smartest thing for us to do would be to get two electric cars/crossovers and an older ICE suv for the rare times we need that lots of space...we live in suburbia and really don’t need the size or utility of a 3 row SUV on anywhere close to a daily basis.

For us, the biggest issue is ease of charging when travelling.

My wife and I live in Orange County. We go to Mammoth at least 2 weekends a month to ski. Sometimes we make 3 trips a month. The drive to Mammoth is about 350 miles, although only the last 20 miles or so are any sort of mountain driving. People from socal know what I am talking about. We have our work schedules set up so that we have every other Friday off. Usually we leave at 430 am on Friday and come back Sunday. Long charging times are definitely an issue for us, as they take away from our ski day. If we leave later in the day, like around 1 pm, then it is not all that big of a deal because we are not skiing that day.

We have put down a deposit on the Tesla cybertrk. The major advantage Tesla has over Rivian is the availability of charging stations. Because of our lifestyle we NEED charging to be easy. I would probably prefer the Rivian, but because we travel so much it is essential that we are able to charge pretty easily on the way to Mammoth, and in Mammoth. We rent a condo every winter with a group of people for the whole winter, so charging at our condo in Mammoth is not necessarily going to be an option. We bought in Orange County a couple of years ago and are unlikely to buy in Mammoth for a while. The ONLY reason I prefer Tesla to Rivian at this point is the charging situation. If that convenience were to change I would probably go with Rivian.

I realize most people charge at home the vast majority of the time, but our situation is different. I would probably prefer an R1T or R1S to the cybertrk, but unless the charging situation improves we will probably go with the cybertrk.

I tried very quickly as well, but my CC fraud detection prevented it at first... :headbang: I think I'm in the first 20K or so, RN112786XXX. What's the first part of your RN#?

Design is growing on me too, except for the profile. I think colored wraps will drastically improve the aesthetics... I actually tow, so I opted fpr the tri motor, mostly due to 500 mile regular range (hopefully 250 towing). However, I will not follow through unless there is a solution that will allow towing gooseneck or 5th wheel, despite the sail panels.

I will be buying a 3 row R1S, and we'll see about the cybertruck.

CCS infrastructure is growing rapidly & will eventually be more widespread than Tesla, due to the fact it's an open standard & more manufacturers & vehicles will use it.

The question is how long will that take. There are a number of companies deploying CCS chargers right now, so fingers crossed it expands at a rapid pace.

California is covered and smothered in charging and if there are holes they will be filled quick. The upper states Montana and Dakota’s won’t be getting anything from EA in their first two rounds. I know there are more but those for sure. So that puts those states past 2022 right now not receiving DCFC at least by EA. Maybe with Ford they might have a shot.
