Don't get me wrong here. I'm not attacking Rivian, at least until I know more about the arrangement they've made with Electrify America. I'm attacking the high rates for Electrify America at some of their chargers. I have found that they vary widely from location to location, more so than can be accounted for by differences in local utility rates.

Volkswagen is building the Electrify America network as part of it settlement agreement with the U.S. for its diesel emissions fraud. To allow VW to charge rates that turn EA into a high profit center for them actually turns what was supposed to be a penalty for a crime into a lucrative business proposition.

So far with my son's Tesla Model 3 charge rates have be anywhere from 13-38 cents per Kilowatt. Most of the time it's in the 13-20 cent range. When we stopped out of curiosity at the EA in Charlotte the lowest rate we saw was 48 cents. You have to hand it to VW and their attorneys to take something bad and make a profit from it. Does not mean I like it or agree with it. I am hopeful that other companies will come forward like Volta that will keep EA competitive.

But charging network is a huge concern for us moving forward with Rivian. I am hoping they will announce some sort of partnership with Amazon or others with a better charging infrastructure. I understand by the time the vehicles are being delivered there will be more DCFC points. But without partnerships or their own network it would seem Tesla has a huge leg up here.

My brother lives in a high-rise in Atlanta which only has two slow EV charging outlets in the garage, both of which are usually occupied.

Also, since I wanted to compare apples to apples in terms of actual fuel usage, I did the calculation so as to arrive with the same charge on the battery at which I departed. I was calculating the actual gallons of gas used, so I wanted to compare the actual electricity used.
These are the barriers whether real or perception that the EV industry needs to keep knocking down.
Commuting is easy IMO because you can always get filled up at home, know your costs, and never have to go to a charge station. Trips are a whole different story and are the piece that add anxiety to me for an EV purchase.

Commuting:
  • Currently our fuel costs are around $2.50/gallon and our electric cost around $0.12/kwh
  • Assuming I am doing the math correctly, I pay about $1.15 in electricity to the $2.50 in fuel for my Leaf vs my 2004 Honda Civic (36-38mpg).
  • So from a daily commuting perspective I do just fine even though my Civic has great mpg and our fuel costs are low at this time.
Long Trips:
  • I'm actually quite happy with the #'s I'm getting for our typical destination to my grandmothers, but it still isn't as 'easy' as hopping in an ICE vehicle and making the trip.
  • Rivian R1T R1S What would you like to see on your new Rivian or from the Rivian company?? upload_2019-10-16_13-23-18

  • If I top off when I get to my grandmothers, then I would have an additional charge cost of ~$14.50 to the above #'s. So $58.50
  • Running the #'s for our van, I come in the $57-$80 range depending on the time of year and where fuel volatility is. Right now it would be right in line with the electric costs apples to apples. I am okay with this knowing that 90% of the vehicles use will end up in it getting charged at home and I can be sure to see the savings then.
  • Charge duration is very reasonable and the fact that I never go to fueling stations for the 90% of driving, I can handle a bit of wait at a stop or two.
To be honest though, I don't care if it would cost me another $100 round trip, I would still take the EV over van any day assuming the charging network is at least available.
I go through the hassle of switching car seats for a 5 minute drive with my kids just to avoid using the van and operating my Leaf. Van is a 2012 Chrysler T&C in great condition, I just enjoy driving an EV that much more (one pedal, instant torque, cabin noise, etc.)

I would like to see an infotainment system for the passengers in the back.

I think the comparison to regular gas is a flaw in the calculations. These perform like high end brands that require premium fuel.

I would like to see Rivian do something different than the mainstream brands. Similar to Tesla hiring some car audio professionals I think from B&O. They get the sound quality with out the huge costs for the name. My wife has and XC90 with Bowers and I feel the Model 3 performance sounds better.

If you were to do brands then from low end to high end start with JL Audio, Morel, Dynaudio and Focal.

Have the interior noise be super quiet sub 55db at highway speeds. I would pay extra for that all day long and have in majority of our cars including the Volvo’s.

My Honda Odyssey uses premium fuel. That's why I used the price of premium in my calculation, as indicated in my original post. (Actually, I used $3.25 although premium in Naples is currently running around $3.159)

One feature I'm not sure I've seen mentioned is a built in garage door opener like HomeLink.

I can't see it being excluded, but I bet it won't have hard buttons...likely SW or voice interface.

I put premium in my Volvo yesterday and paid $3.89. Only time I see those prices is when we go to Orlando.

I saw that 200.7" figure, too, in a review I recently read. However, the specifications chart released by Rivian gives the R1S length as 5,040 mm, which is just under 198.5". It's not much, I know, but every little bit helps.
I believe the spec chart you're referring to was released about a year ago. Rivian is now putting some of that information on their website which I would now go by over that spec chart. I recently compared both (I posted it some where on this forum) and a few specs did change, most notably the vehicle length for both EAVs by approximately a couple of inches. This past weekend at the Normal event I had talked with the R1S team lead about a full size spare tire. He said he had to squeeze every little bit of space to get a full size spare to fit. When I asked him if this had anything to do with the R1S' length increasing he said yes.

Here's my wish-list...and yes some redundancy from people above but just consider that another vote!

1) Pre-wired AUX switches (a la the wrangler tow package). Part two here would be pre-placed mounting points for brackets for things like A pillar lights, winch, rear fogs.
2) Factory installed PPF (a la the new defender), specifically with the ability to replace individual panels in the future...cheaper than paint!!!
3) Rock sliders (frame mounted). Not sure integrated step is necessary (will keep cost down) as the air suspension should make egress easy enough.
4) Full size spare in the R1S. Take a look at the best selling Grand Cherokee (hint: its the Trailhawk....with a full size spare)
5) Lightweight integrated roof mount for rooftop tent.
6) Wireless carplay
7) Front facing trail camera
8) Smaller wheel size options....18in with more rubber would be ideal!....with that in mind, bigger fenders and wheel wells to fit bigger rubber.
9) Exposed tow hooks
10) Foot activated trunk and hood
2) Ditto
4) According to the R1S team lead I spoke to at the Normal event he said the full size spare will be standard on the R1S. He also chuckled and said "how can you have an outdoor adventure without a full size spare", hence his motivation to squeeze one in.

I personally am getting the R1T. It was been mentioned by folks at Rivian that if you get the 180kWh pack in the R1T, I believe I will lose the underseat storage in the backseats.
FWIW, I believe I heard/read somewhere that the gear tunnel will also have less capacity.
