Specs/cost will be key but so will be the support/repair model. With Ford, you probably will be able to just take it to a local dealership. Not sure what Rivian has planned.

I'm hoping Ford would be using a skate board platform being that they have teamed up with Rivian but what does $500 million get an investor these days. The F150 is more truck than I want. If Rivian R1T was a pricey reach I thought a Ford Ranger on a Rivian skateboard platform might do nicely. I could do without the adventure theme if it lowers the price.

I could be easily swayed. If Rivian doesn't have a support network, or if they don't have the features I want, or if the qualify isn't there. I don't think Tesla could sway me. They just have such poor reliability and the company is too unstable. I don't want to lose my warranty in a week if a company goes bankrupt. In fact, I would say that I would more than likely buy a Ford unless Rivian steps it up and really has a product that is way beyond what Ford is offering.

Just sold my F150 in anticipation of buying a Jeep Gladiator. That is, until I found you guys. Currently driving a 19 Mitsubishi Elcipse Cross because they had 0% financing. Also, a couple Harleys in the garage.

I could be swayed if my 1% under invoice pricing is available.
New to this EV thing. Never see any kind of discount on the Tesla forums.
Who pays MSRP for any vehicle?

Only if you believe the short-sellers. Tesla had the greatest quarter of deliveries in the history of the company. Tesla outsold ALL of it's BEV, HEV and ICE competition. Tesla now has $5B on the balance sheet after selling 340k some-odd units. Whereas Ford has only $15B after selling 6 million units worldwide.

People are still lining up to buy Tesla, even upgrading from sub $20k cars to a much more expensive Model 3. This was occurring even before the base model was available for sale. While Tesla had some quality issues early on with the model 3 as they were not ready for that level of manufacturing; those issues seem to be resolved. I have not heard nor read of any recent quality control issues.

This is all before Gigafactory 3 comes online and serves the Asian market. Whether you like Tesla or not, if you think Tesla is going to go bankrupt you are not paying attention to what is really going on. This is without even getting into assets it has, such as its Autonomous Driving Software that every company out there would start a bidding war to get that data....

I personally know a few Tesla owners from the early days of the M-X to the current M-3. Some have had good experiences with their respective cars while some have not. The one's that have not is not so much on the quality (it was in the earlier days but not so much now) but more so on the service side when replacement parts are needed. Complaints lately include the lack of available part(s) in a timely manner to the cost to replace them.

Here's one recent (last month) YT video from TFLnow that not only exemplifies this but also adds to claims I've read questioning the vehicle's design, meaning, designed more for quick assembly and not so much for ease of repair or replacing parts.

Clearly my sample set is small like it would be for most other people unless you happen to work for Tesla or work at a place that does Tesla repairs. None the less real Tesla problems exist at least with replacement parts just as there are the Tesla short-sellers polluting the waters, but I don't subscribe to that being the go-to response any time a potential problem is brought up about Tesla. Tesla has a spotlight on them which sucks for them when negative issues arise, but that same spotlight has given them a lot of free press to go along with their successes. Tesla may be veterans of the EV manufacturer market, but they are still very young with respect to the well established auto industry (who in all fairness have their share of problems but just not as frequent).

Tesla has done some amazing things that has led to their current success but IMO they still have a way to go before they are a sure bet in the automotive industry. Enter Rivian, who claims they have been taking notes of Tesla failures and successes. Great, but the question becomes how will Rivian leverage this information now and down the road to be a better, more desired company to do business with. Rivian is gaining some of that spotlight. They not only need to execute a well design plan but be better at it than the other auto manufactures, otherwise, people will be swayed to go elsewhere for their new/next EV. It's a tall order with a long road and many hurdles ahead of Rivian. I'm rooting like hell for Rivian ... but with my EYES WIDE OPEN.

I welcome competition from Ford. The problem is while many auto companies announce their intention to offer electric models or show concepts, they usually drag their feet in bringing them to market. I'd be happy if Ford proves the others wrong and brings their Mustang-inspired eSUV and eF-150 to market in the same time frame that Rivian does. There's still a lack of compelling models other than Tesla, but I don't like the direction Tesla is taking with simplifying their offerings and focusing on autonomy. The more EV choices on the market the better, and I will buy the first one that hits the market that excites me as much as the Model X did when I bought it. My money is on Rivian for now, but anything could happen in the next 2 years.

Tesla vehicle manufacturing is just a part of Elon Musk's overall vision about transportation. While I'm sure he wants the auto building venture to succeed, his real mission in launching it was as a proof of concept for consumer electric vehicles. That is why he declined to patent some of the technology and why he offered early on to make Tesla superchargers an open platform for any other car maker who wanted to use them. Whether his auto building company makes it in the long term, Musk indisputably hastened the day when a wide array of established and new automakers started producing electric vehicles. So, when it comes to his core mission, Tesla Motors has already succeeded grandly.

I don't pay much attention to Musk's other enterprises. However, I took a tour of the Kennedy Space Center a couple of months ago. I was floored at how significant his Space X business is. NASA has turned over to Space X the launch platform from which the Apollo moon missions launched and reconfigured it for Space X's exclusive use. Most of the satellites NASA is now putting into space go up on Space X rockets, and Space X engineers have permanent quarters at the Space Center.

I don't like Musk as a personality, or respect some of his sales practices, or countenance some of his business practices. But as a visionary who has changed the automotive landscape and is now changing the model for commercial space enterprises, he has few peers. On top of that, his battery packs are becoming staples for power generation companies who need to store solar- and wind-generated power for later distribution, and he is turning attention to electric aircraft propulsion.

Some of Thomas Edison's business ventures failed (such as his movie production company) and some of his technologies were bested by competitors (such as DC power generation and transmission), but his name will never be forgotten in the history of technical innovation. It's going to be the same with Musk.

Yeah, you keep up the wishful thinking, fanboy.

Oh no, you called me a fan boy - you have such a strong argument... Nothing I typed was factually incorrect. Try again.
Can't argue with fanboys. I have already learned that here.

I know specs will be critical, but who might be swayed to buying a Ford BEV truck/SUV over Rivian, and what are your thoughts?

https://www.engadget.com/2019/07/23/electric-ford-f-150-tow-over-a-million-pounds/
I have to admit - my husband and I have owned (and currently own) Fords - F-150, F-350s (2), Ford Explorer, etc. I like their trucks - and I like their SUVs. I currently drive the Fusion PHEV and really like it - but I also want a SUV again, only if it is a full EV (hence my reservation for the R1S)...

The F-150 will get a big boost in development schedule due to Fords investment in Rivian and the partnership with VW. But I think they are still coming out much later than the Rivian. So if Rivian misses a lot of their schedule targets, Ford may catch up and then the risk may be in losing reservations to Ford. I would be tempted for sure, JBH.

I am thoroughly invested in Rivian (would love to actually invest in Rivian beyond my reservation!) and I am sticking with my reservation. Proof will be in the pudding - I am looking forward to getting to view the R1S and R1T at show soon and then for a test drive eventually. If everything comes together I will most certainly place my order.

Plus I really want another EV car company to succeed outside of the old boys club! We need more than Tesla around to really prove that EVs are the future... I am also hopeful for the others out there - but I am just not that confident in companies that only have a few marketing pictures to show for their upcoming cars...

People who resort to calling others fanboys are the same ones that call others racist to avoid having to substantiate their position and have a logical discussion.

OK boys and girls let's try and keep the posts respectful.

Yep, this is basically at the top of my long checklist that also includes many unanswered questions that requires data from Rivian they have not released yet. Such as the purchase process, financing options, which features will be standard vs optional, pricing structure for battery packs and optional features, warranties, service and maintenance, color selection, etc. etc. etc.

With the launch time frame of "late 2020" coming up on just over a year away, I'm expecting (he says hopefully) a lot more information FROM Rivian to be released sooner rather than later. Otherwise, I can easily see this "sway" factor becoming a real concern for Rivian and certainly for many potential buyers. It will certainly get my attention to look elsewhere especially if I'm getting answers to my questions from Ford or other (EV) manufactures that favorably address my checklist items. I'm without a doubt behind Rivian AT THIS POINT, so it would be very disappointing to look and potentially buy my EV elsewhere.
