The original Big Beautiful Bill floating around the house eliminated the $7,500 EV tax credit at the end of 2025. There was a provision that allowed car makers that have sold less than 200,00 vehicles to still get the tax credit in 2026. Does anybody know if that provision survived the final vote? Assuming this survives in the final bill this could be huge for Rivian.

Way too early to understand the changes in the bill during the discussions, I’m sure most of the people voting do not even know what is in the final package they voted on.

It will not get through the senate as is and the tweaks made during senate discussions will end up going back to the house for another vote. This passing was more symbolic than anything else to check the box of passing before Labor Day. One of the senators did not even vote only voting present so as not to have the vote tied. Many republicans voted present as well to even get it out of committee to get to the house.

I understand this bill has a long way to go and the Senate will certainly make changes with the back and forth taking a while to resolve. Most of the articles still talk about all EV credits being eliminated in the House version at the end of 2025. The nuance I mentioned, if it survives the back and forth, would be huge for Rivian particularity as they bring the R2 to market next year.

Tesla Stock And EVs In Focus: What The House-Passed Trump Tax Bill Means | Investor's Business Daily

nuggets:

While the House-passed tax and spending bill would repeal many EV incentives, it also includes a provision for the Federal Highway Administration to impose a $250 annual fee registration for an EV vehicle and a $100 annual fee for hybrid vehicles. This provision aims to make sure that EV operators pay to maintain U.S. roads in lieu of a gasoline tax. Thirty-seven states already collect annual EV fees ranging from $50 to $250 a year.

However, the tax bill does include a "special rule" to keep IRA tax credits in place through "taxable year" 2026 but only for automakers that haven't yet sold 200,000 EV units by the end of 2025.

This would mean that Tesla, General Motors, Ford and others would not be able to take advantage. However, this would give extra runway for Rivian, Lucid and other EV startups.

+1 on symbiotic and no-one read it. We'll see how this shakes out but bringing the 🍿 as it will be interesting. I live in GA, one of many Republican states using a majority the money that will be cut in this bill (Medicare/Expansion/Alt Energy Investments/etc).

No idea, but would this impact Rivian and the Georgia plant?
The bill now also contains a faster phaseout of existing tax credits for low-carbon electricity. Under the new language, companies building solar, wind, geothermal or battery plants could only claim the credit if they started construction within 60 days of the bill passing into law and then put the plant in service by the end of 2028, a narrow window that many businesses might struggle to meet. The bill completely guts the 30% tax credit on home solar. SunRun stock is down almost 40% on the news.

I'm kinda surprised Tesla stock hasn't been impacted. This takes away their carbon credits. That's been a big part of their profitability.

It still has to pass senate. Many blue state senators stand to lose big with their constituants if IRA funds and project are killed. If it passes... you can bet your rear nothing qualifies for anything. Not even the lease loophole.

IS the tax credit still on for Rivian in 2025? Somewhere I got the idea that the R1S was not eligible due to battery sourcing or something.

Call your senator and express

The ball is in the Senate court. Call your senator office and let them know the value of the EV tax credit, and loans to build battery and EV factories, and loans to build more charging stations and how EV incentives of all kinds especially benefit red states and the overall economy. The Senate can undo some of the most hateful and irrational damage in the house bill. Non violent voter feedback and displays of unhappiness with policy really do have an impact. Regardless of what the final law guts, the worldwide movement to electric mobility will not be stopped by any one political party in any one country. Rivian will survive and thrive, as will other EV makers with good management. Drive well.

Lucid has delivered about 10K vehicles to date. They are 60% owned by Saudi Arabia. They would be the biggest beneficiary of the restructured tax credit. IMHO in this form the tax credit has a reasonable chance of being in the final bill.

Pretty sure the cuts are to Medicaid NOT Medicare. Big difference

Rivian probably has about 40K~50K vehicle headroom before it hits the 200K limit.

Grok says:

The House-passed "One Big, Beautiful Bill" (as of May 23, 2025) proposes to terminate the federal electric vehicle (EV) tax credits, including the $7,500 credit for new EVs and the $4,000 credit for used EVs, effective December 31, 2025. A special provision allows the $7,500 credit to continue through 2026 for new vehicles from automakers that haven’t yet sold 200,000 qualifying EVs, excluding major manufacturers like Tesla, GM, and Toyota. The bill also eliminates the $1,000 tax credit for home EV charging stations after 2025. However, these changes are not yet law and must pass the Senate and be signed by the President. For 2025, the EV tax credits remain available for eligible vehicles and buyers.

and regarding leasing:
The House-passed "One Big, Beautiful Bill" (as of May 23, 2025) proposes to terminate the federal electric vehicle (EV) tax credit for leased vehicles, which currently allows the $7,500 credit to be applied as a discount by the leasing company, effective December 31, 2025. Similar to the credit for purchased EVs, a special provision extends the $7,500 credit for leased vehicles through 2026 for automakers that haven’t sold 200,000 qualifying EVs, excluding major manufacturers like Tesla, GM, and Toyota. This bill is not yet law and requires Senate approval and the President’s signature. For 2025, the EV tax credit for leased vehicles remains available for eligible models and lessees.
