Why do you think Rivian moved the charging port on R2 & R3?

R2 is a global vehicle. Most places in Europe, for example, have much better curbside infrastructure for charging while parked on the street.

This location keeps all the same dynamics as R1, as far as relative port location (only difference is nose in or back in) and allows streamlined manufacturing for global model.

I love the uproar from Tesla fanboys on the location. The root cause of the Tesla supercharger issues is that they used too short of cables. Period. It was designed for one car, then they decided they wanted money from other manufacturers so Telsa is going to have to fix their super chargers. As others have mentioned, back doesn't work for a lot of vehicles (including the Cybertruck) because of towing. They need to be flexible. Thankfully V4 superchargers are going to fix that.

I think Rivian really thought this through. Long term, curbside charging will be available more often. Having it on the passenger side makes sense for that reason.

I think what's most crazy is you guys want this company to survive, you want your vehicles supported, and you want to see more people buy Rivian's and for cheaper. But the second they make a very meaningful cost cutting measure (the CEO literally said it was so they didn't have to run HV cable to the front of the car) it's all pitchforks and complaints and "I hate backing into a space so it sucks". Unbelievable.

RJ said in the brain podcast:

1: same side if you back in the garage
2: no need to route to front if its rear motor only
I saw the podcast interview you mention on the "Same Brain" YouTube channel. I think RJ's explanation of the reduced cable routing for the high voltage (since they have a one motor in the rear variant) is the primary driver. Why the charge port is so low was not explained, but it is very low on the R2 and the R3 has it higher. Rivian could accomplish the same goal, reduced cable routing, by locating the charge port on the rear driver's side - like Tesla. That would be better for our home charging situation and would fit Tesla charge sites better..

But would be way harder for curbside charging. Telsa is going to fix their superchargers because even THEY recognize their short cables are the problem .. not the cars.

I agree with you. However in the U.S., curbside charging has beeb a problem in some cities due to vandals and recycle thiefs stealing the cables. Curbside is popular in Europe and works fine in some areas.

I love the new Electrify America indoor charging station built in California (as shown on the Out Of Spec YouTube channel recently. They up-cycled an old automotive garage for ICE vehicles since the building was already zoned for automotive use - good solutions for urban situations. We live in the mountains with snow and ice 4 to 5 months a year, so curbside is a problem.

I think you have to plan for it long term. They will have to solve for the curbside issue at some point. Its the only way adoption really takes off. Too many cities have lots of people that have to park curbside.

Also I said this in the other thread .. The R3 is going to be a massive hit in the EU if they decide to send it there (and they better be planning on that)
