Pretty sure the new Michelins on the Quad allowed them to raise the limit to ~130mph and complete a full 1/4 mile run without running out of steam. There's video of it out there from the reveal.
Just to clarify:

Ferrari 296 GTB 1/4 mile =9.7 sec 149.6 mph (C&D) - its an entry level supercar
McLaren Artura 1/4 mile=10.3 sec 140mph (C&D) - its an entry level supercar
gen2 R1S Quad 1/4 mile=10.5 sec 128.2 mph (MotorTrend)

While straight line speed is often the measuring stick, no one buys supercar for straight line speed superiority. They are sports cars, not drag cars that weighs half of R1S, which makes them far more agile.

As noted by @Donald Stanfield they cannot carry 4 people and tow a boat to a lake so there that too.

Well aware. Just clarifying as you seemed to claim it would max out around 100mph, and that's clearly not the case as the higher speed limit has already been demonstrated publicly. I don't think anyone here expects a Gen2 quad to outperform modern supercars on a Road Course. That duty is left to Rimac and McMurtry at the moment, from an EV perspective. Realistically a Taycan Turbo GT would be interesting to see lap time comparisons to the aforementioned three.

Keep in mind, RJ's original vision was to build an electric sports car not a SUV or truck... maybe someday he'll get to do that :D

If you go back and read what I'd originally written, the point was that R1S is probably quicker than many supercars to about 100mph. Never said it would max out at that speed.

Supercars are significantly quicker from 62mph/100kph to 124mph/200kph and beyond than R1S.

Just talked to a Rivian Sales guy in Laguna Beach about the Quad. He’s saying it’s coming out next month.
I think the first sign that it’s coming soon will be when they open them up for configuration. The fact that they haven’t even opened up, the configurator tells me we’re at least 2 to 3 months out from the first deliveries. Speculation on my part of course.

The 128MPH Quad comes exclusively with 22" wheels and a staggered tire setup—275/50/22 front and 305/45/22 rear, wrapped in Michelin Pilot Sport S5s. All other Quad models will maintain the same top speed as the current Gen1s.

I am assuming they'll have a raised speed limiter when in launch mode like the Tri does.

I am excited in general about the idea of a new R1S (for me) later in 2025. While at first thinking Dual Max, for the range, I settled comfortably into Tri Max territory, because it comes standard with so many optional features (at an attractive price) that I would have ordered (with the Dual Max) anyway. But what about Quad Max?

Speaking just for myself, as a potential customer I would be interested in the Quad Max for interesting and innovative features and functions stemming from having a motor for each wheel. For example (source: Google):
  • Independent torque control, resulting in more precise handling on curves, at speed and during evasive maneuvers (in emergencies).
  • Enhanced traction on wet pavement, ice and snow, and mud and sand.
  • Improved overall stability.
  • Better "feel" when driving, especially while cornering.
  • Overall improved safety.
  • Future improvements via software downloads.
  • And of course "cool" functions that can't currently be imagined.
I do not happen to be interested in blistering acceleration or frightening top speed (any more than what's in the other already very fast Rivian models). But other customers will be. Instead, I am curious what else four motors in a Gen 2 Rivian can bring.

Bottom Line: I will be comparing features and costs of the Tri Max and Quad Max carefully. So like many others, I am very much looking forward to the release of the Gen 2 Quad Max, even if I eventually select a Tri or Dual.

It will come soon. They were recently cold weather testing in AK. I’m expecting the configuration to open up 4-8 weeks before deliveries start but this is complete speculation on my part.

My current guess is we will see it around the June timeframe.
