It's Monday January 6th at 10:53AM EST how come Rivian has announced and started shipping the new Quads? They said beginning of 2025, which it has already begun. This really pisses me off, hopefully the stock will take a hit from the major drop on their part......

I really wish there was a standard font for sarcasm. just figured I would make sure to jump on this before the other did.

Rivian faced a copper shortage in the third quarter of 2024 due to a miscommunication with its supplier. Possible this could delay quad motor production.

can only guess of course. Only Rivian knows what the current timeline is and they haven’t given any update.

The copper shortage was specific to the enduro motor (do Rivian buy premade hairpins rather than raw copper stock? I assume so?). Rivian actually used the shortage to push the tri motor as it apparently relived pressure on the supply constrained enduro motors.

My crystal ball (ie I’m guessing) says we will see pricing end of q1 and deliveries beginning q3.

Rivian have kinda screwed themselves announcing the new halo far to far in advance: and now they need to tread carefully to not poison demand for the tri motor that they can ship now.

They are all enduro motors. Rivian in -house purpose built drive units. My thinking is more motors more copper so if they have a shortage, maybe harder introduce with four motors in each vehicle. I’m pretty sure Rivian will come with it soon. It may not come until the spring though as that’s typically when the car market picks up again..

The motors for the dual motor per axle configs are called Ascent motors rather than Enduro - but my point was more that Rivian almost certainly are buying copper components from Essex Furukawa (hopefully they have diversified a bit now) that are specific to each motor type. So the shortage was unlikey to be copper in general for motors, but copper hairpins, windings, or stock specifically for the enduro drive units, rather than the ascent rear motor pair in the tri motor or all round in the new quad.

There is, it's all caps. Bolding it is optional. Like this:

YOUR PARTNER SURE MAKES A MEAN PUMPKIN PIE.

Clearly, your partner's pumpkin pie stinks. Pretty sure they used cayenne instead of cinnamon, common mistake.

Their apple pie on the other hand...

Yeah hard to say...my point was they are all in house-motors. The new tri and quad motors have different packaging of course as you pointed out. A supply constraint would mean they have to allocate the limited supply to the most popular sellers.

I think Tri has been cannibalizing Dual Max sales a bit too as they seem to be struggling to move the higher priced dual max units. Makes sense because with Tri you get a lot more vehicle and performance for not a lot extra over Dual Max performance.

Aside from the motors it could also be an economic decision. This is historically the slowest time of year for the auto industry. My guess would be they come sometime in q2 or q3....but that is a complete guess.

Here is an article where RJ speaks briefly on the issue among many others.

I’m pretty sure deliveries will be q3, I’d be pleasantly surprised to see them sooner.

I can't wait to see videos of the quad destroying high priced supercars.

Just talked to a Rivian Sales guy in Laguna Beach about the Quad. He’s saying it’s coming out next month.

Only in a straight line up to about 100mph.

Definitely not past 150mph and most certainly not on any road course.

Just say'n :)
True, but the Rivian can do it with 4 passengers and then tow the boat to the lake.

Thanks for sharing. Can you add any more details? for example did he say they are starting deliveries next month or starting to take configurations for production next month and deliveries another month later?

Most of the Rivian sales guys haven’t seemed to know anything, so did you feel he had some inside knowledge or was just guessing?

He’s from Rivian HQ so I assumed he has inside knowledge. I’m looking to trade in my Cayenne Turbo Coupe for the Quad when it comes out so that’s what he told me. He said in about a month is when he can revisit the trade in situation of my Cayenne for the Quad. I figured it would be another month from there for delivery.

one other tidbit, he asked me which model and I said R1S since I already have The R1T Tri so that’s when he said a month. I assume the S will come out before the T.

Pretty sure the new Michelins on the Quad allowed them to raise the limit to ~130mph and complete a full 1/4 mile run without running out of steam. There's video of it out there from the reveal.
