I applaud your zeal.

And can't think of a tool that would be more stifling to innovation than one that takes "the most votes for something" and "holds any large corporations accountable" for implementing it.
remember that they aren’t required to do anything at all (the customer inputs and resulting “WIT” item is more of a public accounting item and not actually something to be inserted into their private work flow). Think of it more as a unionization effort to get demands met and the manufacturer can take it as a leading indicator of where their customer base is going to go should an alternative become available. and because it’s public and neatly summarized, their competitors can take appropriate action too. It’s better than you and me filling out individual feedback forms (which are often requested) because they are isolated and not visible to one another. This is how you win a war: divide and conquer.
And the difference between this idea and this forum here is that here it is mostly users trying to help users (which is great!) but I’m talking about putting market pressure back on the product/service provider since they are in the BEST position to help their users.
anyway this is my last reply here since I don’t want to hijack this post. Hopefully you and I can stay in touch. I’d appreciate your feedback

There can be multiple truths... for me Rivian Nav isn't great and I miss CarPlay. It's enough for me to reconsider getting a R2 if their NAV and software doesn't improve much by then.

I am in this same state of mind. I think most if not all on this platform want Rivian to succeed and prosper. The billion dollar question is "Which is most likely to achieve this goal, 1) forbidding AA/CP in order to control the experience and metrics tracking or 2) allowing AA/CP to satisfy many (not all and maybe not even a majority) of potential customers?" I don't know the answer to this question - I'm sure there are many that will chime in that they do know the answer. I really probably wouldn't use CarPlay as I can get what I need (offroad mapping, Waze) with a phone mount. But I am in favor of customer/owner choice, which includes choice of using Rivian's native built in system (which is improving but no where near perfected) or Android Auto or CarPlay. RJ is betting on 1) above with all his chips. This has clearly cost him sales. It's too soon to know if the company (or current leadership) will survive his gamble.

Agreed 100%. I've lived with the Rivian nav for 6 months and its objectively inferior to every other mapping software out there. Rout planning is a mess, it frequently takes me on non-existent roads, etc.

Apple Music is fine, I'd like Apple Podcasts but of course you can't have every single app, unless you have Apple CarPlay that is.

No texting integration is a joke in this day and age.

Not interested in R2 without significant changes.

Finally had a chance to try CarPlay on a Chevy equinox, a loaner while my Rivian is in the shop. It was laggy and not especially intuitive. I much prefer using Apple Music on my Rivian.

Personally, I like that Rivian controls the whole experience and things are generally consistent. I also like Apple products and the “feel” that results when the same people make both the software and hardware.

As Rivian scales up, economies of scale should mean they can keep improving their UX, faster and faster. So, I’m optimistic.

Rivian has some of the best software on the market. Why would they screw it up by enabling CarPlay? CP and AA are used when OEMs don't have a good software stack. I would much rather have software on my vehicle made by an auto manufacturer, not relying on a phone.

I just picked up a Polestar 2 and checked out CP/AA and Rivian beats it, hands down.

This thread is like an episode of “days of our lives” … only better! 😳

I’m a believer that any intentional distraction while driving is disadvantageous… not that there is anything wrong with that... 😉

Actually reading the voice-to-text “studies” didn’t help to prove or disprove much of anything. Neither study created a baseline for zero distractions (they only compared manual text interaction to “voice-to-text” interaction), both had a very small number of participants, and a manually initiated “voice-to-text” interaction despite the apparent availability of voice activated technology!?!

From (2013) https://static.tti.tamu.edu/swutc.tamu.edu/publications/technicalreports/600451-00011-1.pdf :
”Although only participants who were very familiar with texting on a smartphone were recruited, not all of the participants were previously familiar with Siri or Vlingo prior to practicing just before the experiment. (Approximately 60% of participants were familiar with using voice-to-text technology, but not necessarily Siri and Vlingo specifically.)”
* 43 participants;

From (2020) https://transweb.sjsu.edu/sites/def...pact-Smart-Phones-Driving-Performance-AVs.pdf :
* 32 participants;
* in a NHTSA simulator (where ~87% felt nauseous);
* “participants still had to tap on the phone to initiate any type of reply, regardless of manual or vocal entry of the text.“
“This experiment tested two environments (suburban and highway), each with two interfaces (manual texting and voice-to-text).”
