Guys, Rivian has always been an Android platform. Why in the world do people continue to believe that APPLE CarPlay is just over the horizon, or somehow going to materialize in the next update? You’re expecting a round peg for your square hole. It’s NEVER going to happen. Have you not yet noticed ALEXA in your Rivian? If you really can’t live without APPLE CarPlay, buy a different vehicle. This has really gotten tedious.

They have had my deposit for nearly 3 years now. I will not buy it until it has Apple CarPlay. If it doesn’t, then I’ll solidity my Scout purchase.
There is no “until”. Rivian has been explicit that it is not going to be a part of their software. Just file for a refund if that is a dealbreaker and play solitaire until 2028 when Scout finally ships.

I'm curious about the Nav complaints. I have a phone mount and always set google maps on the phone and Rivan nav at the same time. The route planning for northern New Jersey and New York City area is about 99% identical...
I think one of the complaints is regarding on-the-fly rerouting due to changes in traffic flow/accidents. Do you see the native nav flexing the same way Google Maps and Apple Maps nav programs do?

I don’t recall Rivian nav ever offering me a workaround for an anticipated delay ahead.

Rivian needs to get CarPlay STAT (and whatever non-apple analogue). The Rivian NAV is truly terrible. Right now we have to use the Rivian cartography just to have the map on the screen but have Apple Maps narrate through the phone, which is cloogey and distracting. Also need hands free text narration, this is basic safety functionality.

We got our R1S in April and were shocked that it doesn’t have CarPlay and text narration like every other car does. We travel a lot so we’re in rental cars a couple times a month, which serves as a large sample size for comparison. CarPlay is ideal because you just plug in and go without having to learn any car’s own Nav.

The Rivian is great to drive, we’re happy to be part of the revolution and we’re trying to be a good sport while it grows up.

CarPlay is the buy vs build decision we all learned in business school: build what your competitive advantage is and buy what isn’t. They make a great car that needs to prioritize engineering core functionality and reliability, they shouldn’t make their own Nav in the same way they shouldn’t make their own tires or paper clips at HQ.
Rivian is correct not to include Carplay or Android Auto. Hands free messaging, however, needs to be added in 2025. Rivian navigation has worked well for me so far, but I'm sure OTA updates will keep improving it. I've let Rivian know that handsfree messaging, more voice control in general, and improved bass in the premium audio system need to be high on the 2025 to do list. Drive well.

Android Auto is on 91.9% of all vehicles sold in the U.S., while Apple CarPlay in 93.9%. of all vehicles sold in the U.S.

Remember what happened to Blackberry?

On a recent trip, there was a highway sign announcing an accident ahead and a detour. The Rivian nav didn’t change so I opened Waze, it also didn’t change. Same on google maps. So I figured it was an outdated sign. But a few miles later, I was stuck in the traffic and only THEN did the nav update, about the same time between the car and apps. Just an anecdote, but it made me feel slightly better about the Rivian nav system.

Pretty sure the Android underpinnings of Rivian
Android Auto is on 91.9% of all vehicles sold in the U.S., while Apple CarPlay in 93.9%. of all vehicles sold in the U.S.

Completely irrelevant.

Of the vast majority of cars using AA/CP, none have addressable car OS which is updated over the air. Of those which do—wife’s Audi e-tron comes to mind—the OS is almost never updated and the OS is shit. The auto manufacturer uses AA/CP precisely because it doesn’t want to be responsible for the quality of the infotainment system.

Rivian and Tesla maintain their own in-house infotainment solutions because it allows the company to be more nimble in making changes and adjustments in OTA updates. Use of AA/CP means those operations need to be brought into the conversation and be part of the solution, lest the access to AA/CP break with the update. This layer of complication is considered untenable by Tesla and Rivian.

The BlackBerry analogy is a complete non-starter.

I can tell you are not in Tech. The level of work for the implementation of CarPlay into Rivian is trivial. It has nothing to do work the non-sense you wrote.

It’s a matter of control and subscription revenue.

lol the subscription revenue. data plans are not free, somehow Rivian is profiting off charging $15/month for an unlimited data only SIM? When you find me a data only SIM with unlimited data for that price let me know, would love to have a LTE backup for my Unifi system.

FWIW, the Mach-E gets regular OTA updates to its built-in infotainment system, which is pretty solid, and supports CP/AA. It can be done :)
