I'm guessing you can ask Alexa to open the tailgate. Also, a small cutout on a camper top/shell above the button would probably give you access as well. With all of these controls (tailgate latch; gear tunnel latch; etc.) on the top surface of the bed rails it looks like those of us who might want a camper shell will be SOL as the shell would sit right on top of all those controls.
I hope these numbers don't turn out to be the final dimensions.Don't think I've seen this yet on the forum but thought folks might be interested. Here are the details on interior specs (per email from Rivian):
Name SAE Code Unit R1T 5-Passenger R1S 5-Passenger R1S 7-Passenger Effective Leg Room - Driver L34 mm 1052 1052 1052 Effective Leg Room - Second L51-2 mm 931 931 931 Effective Leg Room - Third L51-3 mm N/A N/A 832 Couple Distance - First to Second L50-2 mm 880 880 880 Couple Distance - Second to Third L50-3 mm N/A N/A 750 Shoulder Room - First W3-1 mm 1539 1539 1539 Shoulder Room - Second W3-2 mm 1496 1496 1496 Shoulder Room - Third W3-3 mm N/A N/A 1298 Hip Room - First W5-1 mm 1394 1394 1394 Hip Room - Second W5-2 mm 1377 1377 1377 Hip Room - Third W5-3 mm N/A N/A 1086 Elbow Room - First W31-1 mm 1548 1548 1548 Elbow Room - Second W31-2 mm 1515 1515 1515 Elbow Room - Third W31-3 mm N/A N/A 1296 Seat Height - First H30-1 mm 315 315 315 Seat Height - Second H30-2 mm 350 350 350 Seat Height - Third H30-3 mm N/A N/A 310 Effective Head Room - First (Glass Roof) H61-1-G mm 1045 1045 1045 Effective Head Room - Second (Glass Roof) H61-2-G mm 970 1008 1008 Effective Head Room - Third (Glass Roof) H61-3-G mm N/A N/A 981
It may turn out that they aren't representative of final seating comfort... My car has more rear leg room than my SUV on paper, and I have no idea how, but you'd avoid the back seat of the car at all costs, and have no issues sitting in the back seat of the SUV.I hope these numbers don't turn out to be the final dimensions.
For example:
The second row leg room is not good:
R1S: 36.7"
Model X: 38.4" (and this is really tight for an adult)
Model Y: 40.5"
Cutouts on the shell would definitely allow access to all the controls on the top rails - but it looks like there are tie downs in the top of the rails too, so there would have to be so many cutouts in the base rails of the shell that the strength of the shell could be compromised.I'm guessing you can ask Alexa to open the tailgate. Also, a small cutout on a camper top/shell above the button would probably give you access as well.
If you have a camper shell on the truck, I don't think you will be moving the tailgate, so it is only the gear tunnel control you need to worry about.Cutouts on the shell would definitely allow access to all the controls on the top rails
Is it standard or an option on the R1T?Towing update from the chat with them. Trailer Hitch is hidden behind removable panel. It is a 2'' Class V receiver. The R1T's towing capacity is 11,000 pounds and the R1S is 7,700 pounds. Also the trailer hitch receiver and vehicle structure are rated for a tongue weight of 810 lbs.

Hitch is standard on both. R1T tongue weight is 1470lbs, not 810 like the R1S.Is it standard or an option on the R1T?
Kind of hard to lift stuff over the tailgate and place items all the way to the front otherwise...If you have a camper shell on the truck, I don't think you will be moving the tailgate, so it is only the gear tunnel control you need to worry about.
That’s awesome! Glad to hear bc I’d be using it primarily for bikes but I’ll need to find an adapter to pump up kites (kitesurfing)So they actually wanted to use one of our presta/schrader 2-in-1 air chucks, which are patented and work very well. But ultimately they ended up choosing our schrader-only automatic locking air chuck which is also patented and very easy to use/airtight seal with no air loss quick release button. That said, from what I've been told they are including a simple presta valve adapter that you can "snap in" to the mouth of the air chuck included. Very easy to use. They were definitely thinking of bikers in this process.
