With the release of Gen 2 with its new autonomy platform there has been a lot of confusion about Driver+ vs RAP. There are a whole litany of terms that Rivian has used to refer to these products and it's gotten kind of muddled. So here's my attempt at clarifying it.

1) What's the difference between Driver + and Rivian Autonomy Platform?
In short - Driver + is Gen 1's system. Rivian Autonomy Platform (otherwise known as RAP) is Gen 2's platform. These titles are the overarching term to refer to all of the safety and autonomy systems. If you open the "Driver Assistance" menu on the infotainment you'll see Driver + on Gen 1, and Rivian Autonomy Platform+ on Gen 2.

2) What things are part of Driver+/RAP?
I won't list EVERYTHING here, but a few of the key items under the Driver+/RAP umbrella are:
  • Highway Assist
  • Lane Change Assist (The blind spot cameras)
  • Automatic High Beams
  • Blind Spot Monitoring
  • Etc.

Basically anything that has to do with the radar, sonar, or cameras.

3)What's the difference between RAP and RAP+?
Much like connect+ there is an upcoming subscription attached to autonomy features. These paid features are known as "Rivian Autonomy Platform+". The things that will be locked behind the paywall as of right now are:
  • Lane Change on Command (auto lane changes)
  • Enhanced Highway Assist (Hands free mode)
  • Driving Comfort Assist (scooching for semi trucks) - Not yet released

The rest of the features are just RAP (without the plus). These will remain free. So don't worry - basic Highway assist will not be put behind a pay wall. Since none of the paid features (or RAP as a whole) doesn't apply to Gen 1, there will be no paid subscription for them either. So basically Gen 2 vehicles will be locked to the Gen 1 feature set if you don't subscribe. It'll still benefit from the better hardware and be more stable/intelligent. But the features will be the same.

Here's a graphic from the Rivian that gives a complete breakdown:

Anyone have any idea on possible prices for the RAP+ subscription once they put up the paywall?

Honestly, nothing more than a guess. Best I can put together myself is that it Telsa charges $99/mo for FSD. That is FAR more capable, and Rivian knows that, so it'll probably be less than that. I'm hoping for something like $20, but likely closer to $50. But that's all just wild speculation on my part. Less than Tesla's $99 is the only thing I'm sure of
