We're OK, but our R1T is not..... rear ended accident

Today I had the most expensive trip to IKEA without buying a damn thing.
It was wet and rainy and the guy behind me wasn't quick on the stop. He got a face full of air bag and distroyed his otherwise lovely X-Terra that he said he paid off just a couple of months ago.

UGHHHH. So sorry to hear about this, Sgt Beavis! I hope that you're able to get up and running quickly, and am glad you and the family are ok.

Seems like people just lost their minds on Saturday. We made a quick drive down to centennial, and passed 3 different rear-end accidents just along 225 between I70 and I25. I mean I think that's only like a 7 mile stretch of road.

It's astounding and scary how many people I see driving at 75+mph while staring straight down at their phones.

One good thing, if everyone keeps getting rear-ended and such there will be 2x demand for new vehicles. Silver lining to the cloud?

So far, I can't say that Nationwide/RIvian insurance has done that great. I put the claim in on Saturday and they assigned it to an agent. I spent all day trying to reach that agent so I can setup a rental car but I haven't been successful at all.

Meanwhile, the collision center says they'll take care of getting my truck from the tow yard. I've already gotten Rivian to call the towing company to release it so it can be moved.

Glad you and your family are fine.
From the looks of the X-T, you got hit from a fast moving vehicle and other factors. Something I noticed after 1 petal driving and braking regeneration (both in Teslas and now Rivian). Folks behind you don't anticipate the vehicle slowing down faster than expected coupled with tailgating is a recipe for disaster. It would be interesting to see the video to verify this. I have had a few close calls from these knuckleheads, and it is always unsettling that they are not paying attention, traveling too fast and not taking the braking regenerate into account.
Now, I get off my soap box and hope you get made whole asap.

I too have noticed this and I have increased my following distance to the cars in front of me to hopefully avoid having to stop that quickly. Just like on my motorcycle because at the end of the day I don't want someone to hit me.

The insurance update:
1. Finally getting a rental car tomorrow (4 days after filing a claim)
2. Finally got an adjuster assigned. He claims he’ll have his inspection done by the end of the week.
3. Truck has been transported to a Rivian certified collision center (Jewell Collision in Denver)
4. Other driver’s Progressive insurance has accepted 100% liability

I’m a little disappointed that it took until Tuesday to get the ball rolling. Past experience with other insurance companies got me into a Rental car by the day following the claim being filed. I had to escalate on multiple fronts (calling the agent’s manager and calling Rivian directly) to get someone to simply communicate with me.

But that’s done. Now comes the really hard part, waiting for my truck to be fixed or replaced. Jewell Collision has a Rivian specialists. He told me that many insurance companies are more likely to fix the R1T than total it because the truck is so expensive to replace. He also told me that it if the truck is to be repaired it will take several weeks for them to get the parts (I kinda expect that). Of course getting a new truck is going to take weeks as well so I’ll just deal with it.

Next up for me is to get a pickup truck rental today. I’m going to go to the collision center and get my roof top tent and other gear (if I can get the gear tunnel opened). I’ve got a $75 daily rental allowance but it tops out at $2150 so once I’ve got my stuff from the R1T, I’m going to swap for a much cheaper rental.

Glad everyone's OK. What was the XTerra driver's explanation? Distracted by phone/infotainment system/looking at something on the side of the road/just spaced out?

Also, I wonder if the rooftop tent played a role (not blaming it, but we all know the rear brake lights alone are pretty weak compared to the center mounted lights at the top of the cab which get blocked by bed-rail level RTT's.) I always worry that some tailgating fool that isn't paying attention is going to hit me whenever I have my Roofnest mounted. I'm looking into mounting some lights spliced into the truck's brake lights on to the Roofnest's rear-facing T-slot.

Hope insurance takes care of everything and you're back in a Rivian soon.

I feel sorry for them - they must feel so unfulfilled.

I keep seeing people reference blocking the 3rd brake light as a possible issue. How many of you have actually driven behind another R1T for any length of time? I was behind one for awhile a few days ago and was honestly surprised how dim the 3rd brake light is compared with the main brake lights. Yes, the mains are too small and really need to be separated from the turn signals, but the 3rd doesn't seem like it helps that much.
