Supply chains are going to be an issue for awhile. Even when they are able to produce the products getting them to a destination is a major problem. You should see the number of cargos ships staged off the coast of Long Beach California because of the backup at the port. Been in SoCal for nearly 35 years and have never seen anything like this at the Long Beach port.

EDIT: -came across this article related to the port backup

Thats not good. Even though Rivian's volume is going to be pretty small compared to other manufacturers, this still could keep production from ramping up to full until 2023.

It's crazy. I was listening to CNBC a few weeks ago, they interviewed a "logistics analyst" about the problem. He said pre-covid prices were averaging $2500 per seatainer and 4-6 weeks port to port. In the beginning of September it was $20,000+ per seatainer and 12 - 16 weeks. There's no way Rivian is not affected by this now and in the future.

Here's an interesting web site that shows the real-time status of ships.

The shortage of ics won't ease for a year or more. So when you get your Rivian think about how:
  • You avoided buying a car from a car dealer who would have jacked up the price for no reason other than the shortage - you got list price!
  • If you have an existing car, it will be worth even more than it would have before, because of the vehicle shortage, good time to sell or trade it in
  • Your Rivian will be worth even more than normal, because other Rivians will be delayed onto the market.
  • Competitors like the F150 Lightening EV are probably also delayed, and they'll be going through dealers so they will be jacked up in price too (the cybertruck won't till 2023 so that reduces availability of similar vehicles).
This must be worth at least $10k off the price! Congrats to you purchasers! My LE can't come soon enough, but I was just thinking about all this tonight.
