I ordered a Rivian Wall charger with my R1S (Sept 2019). I've had a Model S since Feb 2014 for which I use the mobile connector that plugs into a NEMA 14-50 circuit in my garage. It charges at 23-25 miles per hour. Will the Rivian do the same if I install another 14-50 outlet? Can anyone comment on a Rivian wall charger vs. a different wall charger? Are there better after-market chargers? Maybe some that keep track of your kWh?

I recommend the ChargePoint Home Flex if it will be on its own circuit or Wallbox units if you are splitting one circuit.

plugging into a 14-50 will get you about 16 mph

Only reason I can see to get the Rivian EVSE is because at $500 its a pretty good value. A similar Chargepoint is $700 from what I recall. But if you have any sort of incentive from your utility provider I'd wager units like the Chargepoint Home Flex and Wallbox Pulsar Plus will both be eligble while the Rivian EVSE won't. With the R1Ts big battery I'd personally prefer hardwired but a lot of the popular units can go either NEMA 14-50 or hardwired.

Wall units are all about the Kw delivered. The Rivian wall unit delivers your vehicle 11kw an hour. So it takes whatever your average consumption is AC x 11kw = hourly charge rate. Less or more Kw delivered hourly or different average consumption will change that end number

Iā€™d recommend to install a hardwired 60 amp circuit and get the $500 Rivian wall charger. The extra 8 amps of charge over a 14-50 outlet will be nice. Any full size truck or SUV like the Rivian gulps electrons compared a small Tesla.

I ended up getting a Chargepoint Flex installed on a 60 amp breaker yesterday. That way everything is ready when I either get my F150 Lightning or my R1T.

To answer you specific question, the Rivian charge cannot, out of the box, connect to a NEMA 14-50. Itā€™s hardwire only. You could, however, build a pigtail connect with about $15 in parts from HomeDepot and make it work. You just need to set the dip switches inside the charger to only draw 32 amps.

The above would be a reasonable solution if you want to use the existing NEMA 14-50 in your garage. But if youā€™re going to run a separate additional circuit for your Rivian, thereā€™s really no reason not to run a 60amp circuit and hardwire the Rivian charger. If you later move, you can easily disconnect the Rivian charger and replace it with a NEMA 14-50 outlet (youā€™d also want to replace the 60amp breaker with a 50amp).

I believe itā€™s actually 16 amps additional. NEMA 14-50 continuous should only draw 32 amps. 60amp hardwire can draw 48amps.

Iā€™m using the Grizzl-E classic with a 14-50 outlet. Itā€™s providing approx. 20 miles per hour.

Wall chargers can do 40 amps on a nema 14-50. The mobile chargers that come with Tesla, Ford, or Rivian top out at 32 amps.

Here is my setup.

14-50 Outlet used by our Tesla Model Y. Max circuit output is 40A but the Tesla Mobile Connector tops out at 32A
I used the Rivian mobile charger for a week on the 14-50 outlet. It tops out at 34A but that is pretty slow charging for the Rivian.

This past weekend I added an Emporia Energy 48A hardwired Charger on a separate 60A circuit.

The Emporia units are $380-400 depending on the day, they sell on Amazon and their own web site. Great unit, UL certification and no major faults on the Amazon reviews. They also come with a 14-50 pigtail that allows up to 40A or you can hardwire on a 60A circuit and set it to 48A.

Since our main panel is right on the outside of our garage it was pretty easy to pop a couple knock outs and route the 6AWG. Pretty inexpensive too since they are short runs. I think all in i spent $600 for the Emporia and 14-50.

With 200A service we can run both chargers simultaneously and still have plenty of juice left over for the house and our upstairs AC zone (40A). That said I tend to stager the charge times so the panel does not run hot all night.

The older Emporis units are not UL certified, they are well built but not certified. They do have a UL certified one that is supposed to start shipping in May for $50 more.
