Great analysis. Seems like the design has both form and function for efficiency.

cool video. pretty informative. I wish they would have done a version with the bed cover open to see the difference.

Cool. Ya reckon the engineer at Rivian have seen this?

I think this explains why an RTT doesn't have any appreciable impact on range/aero.

I’m sure they’ve done lots of CFD simulations, and have had time in real wind tunnels.

yep:
But I am curious as to their having seen the AirShaper video.

I’m sure they’ve had sales calls from airshaper in addition to this YouTube ad for air shaper and the 3d scanning form thst gets a plug.

they likely use ANSYS and/or Powerflow, which integrate nicely with CATIA.

R1T range is sooo aero sensitive. My little 4x8 aluminum utility trailer with 36 inch cedar sides, weighs maybe around 300# but absolutely destroys range. Just off the cuff I think I get around 1.5-1.6 mi/kwh with that dinky trailer towing empty, while at the same time 1.0 mi/kwh with my big 24' ATC trailer fully loaded to 10,000 lbs.

Pretty cool actually. I didn't consider all the engineering that went into the aerodynamic design. Very nice to see.

Can't wait to see similar on R1S. Having just a flat surface roof vs a bed might help but then the big back end might hurt.

I believe we already have some of that answer from the EPA mileage...316 vs 314.

I wonder if the big blunt back end of the R1S would make towing a trailer more efficient than the R1T, allowing the trailer to better tuck into the SUV's slipstream? The R1T's flow looks a lot like a sleek hatchback off the rear, and while impressive, I wonder how much it hurts towing.
