Last month, R1T validation continued with hot weather towing exercise, which included the SAE’s Davis Dam certification site and runs through Death Valley. Towing 11,000 lbs up high grades at 118º F demonstrates the capability and robustness of the R1T. Check out our latest blog post for all the details. stories.rivian.com/hot-weather-towing.

I would have expected them to really push it. Like 15,000 pounds, and/or 70mph. A good testing program will find the limits of a vehicle.

Anyone have thoughts on what type of testing & if we'll see it?

Also, I wonder what other testing/benchmarking is going on. There is a Jeep Wrangler, some sort of Nissan CUV/SUV, and a Land Rover Defender 110. I saw several Dodge trucks in the other towing video as well.

I hope we get to hear or see the results of whatever comparitive testing they're doing!

I found this quote from the blog post informative:

"We generally see about a 50% reduction in range when towing at full capacity."

At full capacity, and with a box test trailer, that's pretty reasonable. I see about the same with my Model X and 4500 lbs but with a narrower, radius-edged Airstream.

Serious question. Apologies for my ignorance.

Why do they keep mentioning altitude? Isn't altitude irrelevant to an EV?

Because they were going uphill and wanted you to know how much elevation gain they had? It might have some effect on cooling and will have an effect on aerodynamics.

In addition to what @jjwolf120 said above (which I agree with), if they are using an air source heat pump for cooling, it gets derated at higher elevations. For instance, at 5000 feet above sea level, an air source heat pump has a correction factor of 0.83, meaning it's only 83% as effective.

Since this test was focused mostly on whether the cabin and pack would maintain cooling, this may have been a concern and a reason for their references.

Although the power output from the motors is not impacted, the ability of the thinner air to cool components is reduced. You have less airflow over those components that need to be cooled.

Well, now I feel more educated. Thanks for the responses.

Given my R1T will spend 99% of its time between 5,200 and 12,000 feet, I am keen to know what impact elevation has.

Standard pressure at 5,000/standard pressure at SL.
12.2/14.7=.83

A) My f-150 loses more than 50% range towing a similarly shaped, lower weight trailer
B) Did they tow the R1T to the desert inside the trailer being pulled by a RAM? If so, that's lame. Should've towed that white trailer all the way there. At least do a better job of hiding it in the video
C) Very little specs in the video. What's the grade? What's the speed?

There is a little more info on the blog but nothing really precise. At least one of the test sounded like they accelerated up to 55 and were supposed to hold it there, but the speedometer looked like it was at 51. They really didn't give you a good look at the speedometer in the video's. In the blog, they discuss where they were doing the tests, so you might be able to look up the grade(s).

Also posted in the "Towing" thread, but:

Anyone else catch the "Our target is to charge up to at least 440 for tomorrows testing" at ~2:20?

I think the "400+" will have more + than some have been anticipating

440V, not miles.
