I’ve been out of town for the past week. My R1T has been sitting at home in my carport plugged in.

- 70% Limit
- 240 V @ 48 amps
- Charge schedule from 12am to 12pm daily
- the info below covers the period from 1/7/2023 to 1/14/2023. The car was charged to 70% after midnight on 1/7. My mobile car detailer washed the car later that morning and then plugged it back in. The car has been sitting there ever since.
- Gear Guard is off at home
- Car is connected to WiFi
- I didn’t pay attention but I’m guessing the weather in Phoenix, AZ during this period ranged from daytime highs in the upper 60’s and overnight lows in the low to mid 40’s.

According to info in the Rivian app, the truck has taken 32 kWH of electricity in the past week and added 56 miles of range in 7 days.

That sure looks like losing 4.57 kWh/day and 8 miles rated range per day while the truck is sitting idle.

Am I interpreting these numbers correctly?

I did call Rivian service, who said this is more than expected, and they are scheduling a service appointment for me.

Here are some screenshots. The second is from our Model 3 which is plugged in and parked right next to the R1T. It has taken 0 charge in the same time period.

Here is mine after a 24 hour period. I have a service ticket for next week.

That’s expensive. And wasteful. Wonder if charger keeps vehicle awake.

FWIW, as a test, I let mine sit unplugged, outside for almost 10 days while I was out of town. Temps were in single digits Fahrenheit much of the time. It went from 85% to 82% during that time frame.

The chargers do seem to keep the vehicle in a "more awake" state which is honestly fine by me. I usually only keep it plugged in all the time when the temperatures are really low which is when I want it to be really active about monitoring the battery anyway. Unplugged I typically lose 1% a day which seems reasonable for a vehicle without a "start" button.

That’s acceptable in my book.

My R1T has been sitting unplugged for almost 5 days. Started with 85%/240 miles, now down to 77%/216 miles.

Holy cow, that’s very similar to what I’m seeing.

I just looked at my app again. I’m wondering if Gear Guard was on in my case? I won’t know until I get home and see if anything was recorded.

Anyway, I saw this in the app - Record away from home as I set it.

My car is at home, but does that picture mean Gear Guard is on?

I just manually turned it off via the app. We’ll see if that makes a difference. I’m not back for another week.

I’ll double check the address I set as my home location when I return. I actually remember a few months ago after a service visit my home location was incorrectly listed with the wrong direction - e.g., North instead of South, but I fixed it. I likely chose the incorrect auto populated address when I was resetting things after service. But as I said, I found it and fixed it. No reason it would change back.

Wow. I’d be content with that.

Based on current production alone, there is a waste of 21,000,000 kw per year due to vampire drain. That’s unacceptable.
The whole electrical energy distribution system has various loss contributors, much like the system of distributing gasoline from refineries into our fuel tanks. I hope these systems become more efficient as the grid is built out for more and more EVs.

A service representative just called me back, said he spoke with a battery tech, and that this level of drain is “normal.”

I said there is no way this is “normal,” asked to talk to a supervisor, who then scheduled an appointment.

I think I need to join Reddit and send a message to the software developer who posts over there. I have a bad feeling local service is going to do some basic diagnostics and say nothing is wrong.

It is normal. Acceptable is a different story.

Well said, unfortunately.

I’m going to review that Lightning invitation to order that I’ve been ignoring for the past 2-3 months.

I absolutely love the R1T but this level of waste and inefficiency is really bad.
