My local installer recommended a JL audio sealed enclosure subwoofer, it’s a wedge shape, will fit on top of spare tire in my R1S, with a amp added along side of spare tire area, I have the spare tire already and the only sub that will fit has a edge shaped box that is usually used behind seats in trucks, only caveat is that the very back section of trunk area, the cover will have to sit at the slight angle that’s created when you make it flush with the rest of rear storage area. He said when he just replaced the sub in original location on another rivian there was still lot of vibrations, even with lots of sound deadening material, will update after installation with pics, scheduled in a couple weeks
Other option would be a custom box, but I think the existing ones are very well made to get best sound out of subwoofer, will be a 12 inch sub
Do you plan to add an additional 12V battery, or just run the additional hardware off the existing OEM 12V?

Can't say it is necessary -- far from an electrical systems expert, but I do know the 12V in the R1 has had problems and issues more generally. So when I was talking to a sound shop about upgrading my whole system, they proposed to include a 2nd battery for the amp/sub in the spare tire space to deal with the heavy draw and not potentially overstress / cook the 12V.

My wife loves bass. She has wanted an upgrade in every vehicle she's had.
The R1S is actually awesome for upgrading. The sub in the side is a standard size 10" sub and the box is quite large.

I had an Alpine sub already that fit perfect. https://www.crutchfield.com/S-CR4QZ5tkjul/p_500SWRT10/Alpine-SWR-T10.html

The stock sub is actually a dual 4 ohm coil, thought that was interesting. I used line level inputs into a JL Audio amp. I was able to find a 12V power on the left side of the trunk with the solid pinkish wire in the picture. Since it switches off with the car, I also used that at the turn on signal for the amp.

I ran a remote knob up to the front seat so the wife can adjust easily.
First try, the whole area rattled horribly. Put a ton of acoustic mat on everything I could around the sub. That mat fixed it all and now can crank out way more power than what the wife will want.

Can you share where you tapped the speakers for your input?

Edit: nevermind, you tapped the factory sub. Where would be a good place to tap if you had the base audio without sub? What speakers are full range? Or is the crossover built into the speaker? Thanks.

Wonder to what extent the various recent OTA adjustments to the sound in the Gen1 R1S has affected any of these installs?

Just my two cents here. I had a JL audio subwoofer installed. Removed the tray above the spare tire and had box built with the subwoofer. Attached to Blam amplifier. It is awesome. Adds so much fullness to the sound. The newer updates have only made the system better. Still some volume issues between Apple's Dolby Atmos and without, but they are getting better. I am very happy with the install.

Thanks for sharing. Did your installer add amplifier and another battery? Did you just change the subwoofer (not sure if G1 R1S comes with one) or the door speakers also? I’m planning to go all out
