Ok.. so fundamentally I understand you can’t get 240v out of a 120v plug. I get that. So what exactly happens if you plug the Rivian 14-50P plug into this adapter Dr a campground with a 30A TT-30P plug?

We just came back from a camping trip and found we could only charge at 1.5Mi/Hr on the 20A 120V outlet. There was a lovely TT-30A outlet just teasing us.

could this adapter let us at least charge at around 3Mi/Hr?

Seems like a question for the vendor of the adapter.

If you physically adapted it and used the supplied 14-50 dongle, the portable EVSE would only see 120v and may or may not even work because it is expecting 240v based on the dongle plugged into it. My guess is that it would default to the 5-15 plug settings which would only give you 12 amps continuous.

You could physically adapt it to the 5-15 dongle, but it'd still run at the same 12 amps.

If they made other dongles for the portable EVSE, a TT-30 would be a good one for campgrounds. On a 30 amp circuit like that you could get 24 amps continuous. Twice the amps, twice the MPH, so yes you could get 3 MPH. But they don't supply that dongle. Hopefully the EVSE supports other dongles and they show up in the gear shop s00n.

I can't answer this exactly because I do not, alas, have a Rivian but I can tell you in general what happens. The portable EVSE needs to see some voltage greater than some minimum voltage (I'd guess about 90V) between its L1 (X) and L2 (Y) pins and at least that between L1 (X) and earth so the adapter wires the TT-30 black (hot) to the 14-50 black (X), TT-30 white (neutral) to the 14-50 (Y), nothing to the 14-50 (W) and TT-30 ground to the 14-50 ground. Looking at the 14-50R with the round pin (earth/ground) at 6 o'clock X, Y and W are, respectively, the pins at 9, 3 and 12 o'clock. This puts 120 between L1 and L2 and connects ground as required for 120V charging. This works with a Tesla UMC using the 14-50 plug. The Rivian "UMC" may have logic that says "NO" to 120V with the 14-50 adapter.

[Edit] If it does not shut down because the voltage is appreciably less than the 208 - 240 normally associated with the 14-50 adapter it should allow that adapter's rated 32A and, thus, the full 30A of the campground receptacle.

Just get a 16 amp 120v evse. I do not know if the car will accept 20/24 amp at 120v but you can try. Mostly, this is a poor outlet to use for EV charging.

I know 16 amp works and 24 is really not that much faster, sadly.

I am in a similar situation - facing a camping trip in 5 days with minimal charging infrastructure along the way. We are staying at a campground with only TT-30 RV outlets. I found a similar product on Amazon and am going to try it, first manually reducing to 24 amps in the rivian.

Please report back if the Rivian accepts 24amp pilot on L1 charging. You will need to also buy a EVSE (the Rivian one won't do > 12 amp @ 120v).

So I was willing to try to do that - but I haven‘t yet found a non-Rivian EVSE charger that claims it will support that. Do you have any you know of?

Some say this works, with their TT-30 adapter, but YMMV. Don't but it unless you don't mind just having a good second travel adapter handy :)

This website is blocking amazon links. Just go google for "
MUSTART TRAVELMASTER Level 2 Portable EV Charger, 25ft Cable, Intelligent Plug Identification Auto-Adjusts Maximum Safe Current 15A/25A/32A Electric Vehicle Plug-in Charging Station (2-Gen)

"

I did charger 120v @ 16 amp successfully with my 16 amp 15-20 adapter, so ignore the Rivian manual which says the truck limits to 12 amp.

I have a 50 amp RV. I use 30 to 50 amp "dogbone" adapter in camp grounds. I also use a Y adapter that combines 2 30 amp plugs into a 50 amp plug. Works well! Should work with the charger. Just have to select the right amperage that doesn't trip the breaker and follows NEC guidelines for a continuous circuit. Search Amazon for these.

Perhaps some clarity before somebody gets themselves in trouble. It puts it on a 50 amp plug but you still have 240 volt 30 amp service. This does require two two plugs which will probably require two campsites. Not always practical.

Many Rv pedestals are back to back. Where you have 2 30amp plugs (one on each side). I have also used a pedestal with a 30 and a 20 (another adapter) on the same pedestal or a 30a extention cord to another pedistal. Basically, you are getting L1 voltage from one plug and L2 from another. Since my coach splits this onto 2 legs of 120v, I'm not worried about being unbalanced in amperage. Your charger will utilize 220v and to be safe, you should set the charge amperage to 20% less than the smallest amperage. So, if you have one leg of the adapter plugged into a 20 amp (non gfci) circuit, you can charge at 15a @ 220v (twice the charging speed of just plugging into the 110v). Any questions, consult an electrician.

J1772 spec limits 120v charging to 16A. I would be surprised if the Rivian would accept more than that.

My understanding is the adapter in OP’s original post “tricks” the vehicle into thinking it is receiving low voltage charging through the 14-50 evse. As @ajdelange mentioned I think the question is whether the truck will accept it or not.
So my question - do we think it’s safe to try and/or can I screw anything up on the truck by trying it?
