I took my father in law's R1T out into Foster Canyon yesterday to try it out. The road is really primitive and mostly slippery clay. We went out a couple miles and eventually took it up a very steep ridge. It started raining really hard and the road turned to a stream bed but the R1T handled it incredibly well. It plowed forward effortlessly. I had it mostly in all purpose off road but put it in sand mode to get out of a stream bed. I realized there was no way out of the stream bed and so I backed it right back up the steep side (using the camera which worked great). The forward camera is super helpful and the whole thing was confidence inspiring and fun. We ended up high on a ridge but the rain never relented so the pictures of that bit aren't great. We ended up in a different spot called Kahuna rock where the rest of the pictures are from. I have a R1S coming (hopefully soon). I have been able to use this truck quite a bit and can't wait to get my own.

Congrats. Looks fun. I love the Red Rocks around Gallup.

The only place with maybe nicer red rocks is at Jemez Pueblo

I've been going back and forth on the tires (21 or 20), but I do think New Mexico back roads probably need the 20S

Jemez is gorgeous as well. I haven't used the 21s but I'm definitely going with the 20s. I have a launch edition which makes that decision easier but I think I'd still spring for them here. I'm hoping the charging network gets up and running soon but Durango and Pagosa have fast chargers which makes getting around this area much easier. Having them right in town makes it easy because you can get some food and let it charge. I might need to get a thermos too.

Nice...I didn't know they had fast charging in Durango. Good to know.

My profile picture is the R1T charging in Durango. It's an easy walk to downtown.

Great photos and thanks for the report! I used to do some work up in Window Rock and Chinle on the AZ side. I have seen a good amount of folks from Gallup back in the day. Your photos and report have me thinking of heading out that way again for an adventure whenever I finally get my R1T.

Quick question - is the tonneau cover only party open for a reason or is it one of the many that has had some early issues?

I figured that would get asked. We had some kid bikes in the back so it was partially open.

Farmington really needs some fast chargers yesterday. Would really help out. Lots of people bypassing that area and goin up from Santa Fe to Pagosa due to no chargers in Farmington (which is spending tens of millions of $$$ trying to appeal to vacationing Californians to make up for the coal mine / coal plant closures, but with basically zero EV infrastructure, so they can't road trip there despite it being a main thoroughfare for a road trip into the SouthWest).

Really, all of northern NM (other than Taos) could use some. Add in Cuba for sure, then maybe Tres Piedras, Red River, Ojo Caliente, Aztec, Crown point, etc. Southern NM is ironically well covered despite being super oil&gas, because Allsups gas stations joined the EV fast charger craze early.

White Sands needs RAN like yesterday :)

Such a beautiful spot and photos of Rivians would really pop there...in middle of the day, at sunrise or sunset...

I-40 is fine because of the electrify americas at walmarts. Also, Flagstaff, sedona and Cortez as well. A guy who said he was a redneck that I talked to in Pagosa was really interested and said that his boss was interested in changing their fleet over. The fossil fuel industry would like you to think that charging takes hours and cost a fortune. Once they hear that a truck that doesn't look like a spaceship with 800 hp and massive acceleration that can pull 11,000 pounds charges in 20 minutes (to 70%) for 20 bucks it starts sounding like a no brainer. And when you mention the price, no one bats an eye. it's a pretty easy sale.

Gallup can certainly use a charger downtown. Hopefully some of these towns will realize the economics of it make sense.
