I'd love to trade in for a Gen2. But, with only 11K miles and plenty of range for where I drive, just doesn't make sense for me.

@Budman

Thanks so much for your post. Happy for you and love the šŸ”µ.

I'm awaiting my GĀ² R1TĀ³ Ascend hopefully any day now (Rivian CS Guide šŸ¤ž).

I too have 63k miles on my 30 month old R1Tā“, but otherwise it's been bulletproof and love every second behind the wheel (a lot of seconds behind the wheel).

Dual performance seems to have been the sweet spot in GĀ¹, but I'm happy and feel confident that Ascend Tri now does the same and more and is a compelling offering even over the GĀ² Quad, because of range for me.

I did however get five 21" Aero wheels blacked out with the new Michelin Defender tire, which are awaiting my new R1T. Since I drive so much I'm hoping to get closer to 400 miles with them, only switching to 22" sports in the warmer months.

Can't say it enough really happy for the GĀ² move.

I lived in Minnesota for 20 years before moving south not long ago. The heat pump is of very limited value in very cold weather. Actually I think my efficiency might have been worse than my non-heat pump Tesla.

It will be interesting to see how it holds up after 55k miles. I would hope the new one would be quieter and tighter than one several years old with that many miles on it.

When I test drove about 8 different Rivians before buying mine (5 Gen1 and 3 Gen2), I can't say the Gen2 RIT rode or drove any better than the Gen1 but the Gen2 R1S was markedly better than the Gen1 R1S's I drove. I did like the better cameras but the Gen1's are good enough and Rivian's version of autopilot is so far behind Telsa's that on Gen1 and 2, it is almost like an afterthought.

If I were in a cold climate, I'd stay as far away from LFP as possible, thankfully the max pack isn't LFP. I have LFP batteries for some of my ICE motorcycles and in cold weather they truly suck. Sometimes they can barely crank the motor.

What I think is interesting is how Rivian revamped some of their pack sizes. The large is much smaller now. So while possibly the motor efficiency is better, I'd still prefer the larger pack if I am camping or using it to power other things.

@Budman -glad you are enjoying your Gen2. I think the biggest takeaway will be the advantage of the bigger pack for you. The charging network was pretty terrible when I lived there but it looks like the Tesla network has gotten better.

Iā€™ve put ~47k miles on mine in ~18 months, due primarily to 600+ mile roadtrips most weekends. Sharing this in case youā€™re interested. TLDR: Quad Large and Dual Max have same efficiency during side by side highway driving in cool and warm temperatures, and lifetime, which is a mix of city and highway, and results in my Dual Max being able to drive ~20 more miles than my Quad Large. I didnā€™t comment about the difference in stereo, but the Meridian is by far superior ā€¦ or was, until the recent software upgrade and Connect + option. https://www.rivianforums.com/forum/...ficiency-my-real-world-test.28469/post-629954

Iā€™m curious. Did you note your trade inā€™s lifetime efficiency?
Itā€™s not quite lifetime but over the last 47,000 miles this was the trip meter. 2.08.

Is it cool enough up there yet for you to comment on how effective the heat pump is improving cold weather range? I'm thinking of making the same switch. Thought I would wait until November just in case some incentives come out trying to make YE numbers.
Here is a bit more detail on my Gen 2 efficiency/range observations so far vs my Gen 1 and out Volvo XC40 recharge. This data is over the same route we take often. 165 miles mix of freeway and rural roads. Looks like the Gen2 efficiency is very close to the Gen 1 but the range is obviously better because of the bigger battery.

I always thought the hope for big efficiency improvements with the heat pump were a bit optimistic. So far that seems to be true. I will continue to collect more data over time and report back.

The blue data points are the new Gen2 Dual motor max pack vehicle.

After putting 55,000 trouble free and wonderful miles on my R1T Quad Motor I took the recent Rivian trade-in incentive to replace it with a Dual Motor Max Pack R1T.

Why, you might ask given the deep discount the early reservation holders got? A few reasons;
* I have never wished for more horsepower but have wished for more range.
* The basic warranty expires at 60k miles. While my first R1T was trouble free, who knows....
* I was about due for another set of 21" tires at about $1800 so I saved that and got rid of the 21" unicorns for a more common tire size.
* But mostly, because I can... And the range thing. I live, wander, and play in MN, WI and the Dakotas/Montana and Canada. It gets cold and the charging is sparse. See below for the current map of planned/permitted/under construction Supercharger network expansion. Tell me what you notice about MN, WI, the Dakotas, Montana Manitoba, Ontario..... So ya, range range range.

Picked up the Gen 2 R1T 5 days ago and already have 1,000 miles on it. Build quality is excellent. It's quieter and smoother than the Gen 1. It's more efficient and for my driving conditions and use case I am seeing the advertised 420 miles of range (more more on this coming soon). The steering and suspension are tighter, quieter. The cameras are much improved. All the doors open and close better. The adaptive headlights are really cool. Proximity locking with phone as key is much better. The new powered tonneau is quiet and smooth (my Gen 1 cover worked fine for 2.5 years). The only thing that is not better is the sound system. I'm a hard of hearing totally non musical guy but even I can tell it's not great.

Given my very positive experience with the Gen 1 R1T I had no concerns about immediately taking this one into the hinterlands right out of the gate and so far, so good.

Photos below. Old on the left, new on the right on trade-in day at the Minneapolis service center. (I'm talking about the trucks here, obviously...)

Excellent! I tire of the Whine Festivals. Great story. Nice Rivian Blue, too. Drive well.

I have 22.5K miles on my '23 R1T Quad Large so I'm not yet prepared to take advantage of the trade-in offer as I'll lose too much on that transaction. That said, if and when I were to do it, that would be the exact configuration I go for - Dual Max to try and get as much range as possible while towing my Airstream.

I'd love to see some real world results of towing a trailer with the Gen 2 Dual Max to see if they're able to provide 210 miles of towing range per full charge. I don't really need a truck that can do 0-60 in under 3 seconds, but I would love a truck that can pull a trailer for more than 150 miles (or 120 when realistically keeping the charge between 10 and 85%).

Not to derail this thread, but for towing I think that you'd be better served with a Silverado or the newest GMC one (see Out of Spec Reviews!). The new battery packs, while more efficient in normal condition, I don't think they might add ~100mi of towing range. Maybe 20-40 additional miles?

Yeah you're absolutely right and this is why I'm waiting to see some real world results.

The Silverado EV and Sierra EV models are straight out beasts with their large batteries and 440 mile non-towing range, but I also don't want to get an EV truck with a rear-mounted charge port. I'd prefer a front passenger side port so I can pull up to stations with the trailer in tow and still make a charge session work without dropping the trailer off somewhere else at best, or blocking a whole bunch of parking spots at worst.

The Ramcharger is another option for towing range, but then you're still clinging on to an ICE engine, even though it's a generator and not a powertrain component. Still, gas is gas.

This week I started looking at the Sierra mainly due to the range, but also because I really love that mid-gate. But then I measured my garage, and that freaking 9.5 foot beast is just a bit too long to fit. I cannot have a vehicle that won't fit in my garage.

Do you miss the extra drive modes, or not at all? I'm in a similar situation but, my Gen 1 Quad only has 8,000 miles on it still(I work from home and drive the Porsche mostly).

Was contemplating the swap since I'm a little leery about some of the already large-scale changes.

I miss the idea of them. But the reality is I never used rock crawl or sand mode. Rally you can get by turning stability off. The All Purpose steering mapping on gen2 feels about like sport did on gen 1.

Can you break that down a little? The software upgrade made the sound system better? But only if you have a connect + option?
