makes sense why you upgraded. features that impact you daily as you mentioned are important. id say in particular the range and cameras.

id suspect the steering being tighter and quieter is the difference between 55k and 1k miles? im also curious to know what you mean by the doors open and close better, could you elaborate? and when you say its smoother, do you mean the ride or the motors or maybe both?
Regarding the steering; There is only All Purpose mode on the Gen 2 and no Sport Mode. The steering response of the All Purpose Gen 2 is like a better implementation of the Gen 1 Sport Mode. Tight and silky with more feedback on corners.

The ride/Suspension feels better. Maybe less slop/backlash/rocking? It wasn't bad before by any means but the Gen 2 feels more refined. The Rivian motors are much quieter than the early Bosch motors. Those sounded like a jet turbine at low speeds.k

We have not had hot weather so I can't comment on the HVAC noise.

The cabin doors feel like they have less swing weight and they open and close solidly and easily.

The gear tunnel doors open easier (my old ones creaked a bit and didn't fall down with ease). However, they close harder. Like the weather seal is tighter so it takes a pretty good push now to get them to latch.

Is it cool enough up there yet for you to comment on how effective the heat pump is improving cold weather range? I'm thinking of making the same switch. Thought I would wait until November just in case some incentives come out trying to make YE numbers.

Does your power tonneau cover come installed on delivery?

Congratulations on the trade in BTW!

Too quick for me to trade in but I understand the mileage part. I only have 26,xxx on my 2022 launch. Will see if I can hold onto it until my 11 year old gets his license (yes another 5 years). By then maybe the gen 4 will be out and he will get my gen 1. ;)

55k is substantial! That's a lot of traveling. Still under 10k on mine. Enjoy the new ride, looks terrific!
oh man, get out there! I put 40k+ on my R1T, and have 16k on my R1S after 5 months of ownership

Made a drive at 45 deg. The efficiency of the Gen2 was about the same as the Gen1 at that temp. I will continue to monitor and report.

I second the heat pump concern question. I did a trip late 2022 bottoming out at 0°F, Gen1 large quad with warm battery only took a 10% hit over my summer drive of the same route. What are your thoughts?

What was the battery temp, and what efficiency did you get?

Tesla S, Toyota FJ, R1S Quad Large Pack Feb 2023
After putting 55,000 trouble free and wonderful miles on my R1T Quad Motor I took the recent Rivian trade-in incentive to replace it with a Dual Motor Max Pack R1T.

Why, you might ask given the deep discount the early reservation holders got? A few reasons;
* I have never wished for more horsepower but have wished for more range.
* The basic warranty expires at 60k miles. While my first R1T was trouble free, who knows....
* I was about due for another set of 21" tires at about $1800 so I saved that and got rid of the 21" unicorns for a more common tire size.
* But mostly, because I can... And the range thing. I live, wander, and play in MN, WI and the Dakotas/Montana and Canada. It gets cold and the charging is sparse. See below for the current map of planned/permitted/under construction Supercharger network expansion. Tell me what you notice about MN, WI, the Dakotas, Montana Manitoba, Ontario..... So ya, range range range.

Picked up the Gen 2 R1T 5 days ago and already have 1,000 miles on it. Build quality is excellent. It's quieter and smoother than the Gen 1. It's more efficient and for my driving conditions and use case I am seeing the advertised 420 miles of range (more more on this coming soon). The steering and suspension are tighter, quieter. The cameras are much improved. All the doors open and close better. The adaptive headlights are really cool. Proximity locking with phone as key is much better. The new powered tonneau is quiet and smooth (my Gen 1 cover worked fine for 2.5 years). The only thing that is not better is the sound system. I'm a hard of hearing totally non musical guy but even I can tell it's not great.

Given my very positive experience with the Gen 1 R1T I had no concerns about immediately taking this one into the hinterlands right out of the gate and so far, so good.

Photos below. Old on the left, new on the right on trade-in day at the Minneapolis service center. (I'm talking about the trucks here, obviously...)

The hinterlands (MN/SD boarder area). She's not a pavement princess. It's an adventure vehicle.....

I’ve put ~47k miles on mine in ~18 months, due primarily to 600+ mile roadtrips most weekends. Sharing this in case you’re interested. TLDR: Quad Large and Dual Max have same efficiency during side by side highway driving in cool and warm temperatures, and lifetime, which is a mix of city and highway, and results in my Dual Max being able to drive ~20 more miles than my Quad Large. I didn’t comment about the difference in stereo, but the Meridian is by far superior … or was, until the recent software upgrade and Connect + option. https://www.rivianforums.com/forum/...ficiency-my-real-world-test.28469/post-629954

I’m curious. Did you note your trade in’s lifetime efficiency?

I also put a bunch of miles on vehicles. My lifetime efficiency on the first QM T was 2.32 (61,500 miles). Second QM is 2.22 (21,500) but I'm almost never in conserve. I test drove a Tri Max S a couple of weeks ago in Normal. Before I picked the vehicle up I drove 20 miles each way on I 74 in my truck (conserve) at 73-75 mph. Got 2.2. Picked up the Tri Max and made the same trip & got 2.56. Truck is on Michelin Agilis all weather 20s & S was on Bright 22s. Day was perfect weather & calm for Normal. Not sure that is far enough to draw a conclusion other than tires are a BIG deal which I already knew.
