After putting 55,000 trouble free and wonderful miles on my R1T Quad Motor I took the recent Rivian trade-in incentive to replace it with a Dual Motor Max Pack R1T.
Why, you might ask given the deep discount the early reservation holders got? A few reasons;
* I have never wished for more horsepower but have wished for more range.
* The basic warranty expires at 60k miles. While my first R1T was trouble free, who knows....
* I was about due for another set of 21" tires at about $1800 so I saved that and got rid of the 21" unicorns for a more common tire size.
* But mostly, because I can... And the range thing. I live, wander, and play in MN, WI and the Dakotas/Montana and Canada. It gets cold and the charging is sparse. See below for the current map of planned/permitted/under construction Supercharger network expansion. Tell me what you notice about MN, WI, the Dakotas, Montana Manitoba, Ontario..... So ya, range range range.
Picked up the Gen 2 R1T 5 days ago and already have 1,000 miles on it. Build quality is excellent. It's quieter and smoother than the Gen 1. It's more efficient and for my driving conditions and use case I am seeing the advertised 420 miles of range (more more on this coming soon). The steering and suspension are tighter, quieter. The cameras are much improved. All the doors open and close better. The adaptive headlights are really cool. Proximity locking with phone as key is much better. The new powered tonneau is quiet and smooth (my Gen 1 cover worked fine for 2.5 years). The only thing that is not better is the sound system. I'm a hard of hearing totally non musical guy but even I can tell it's not great.
Given my very positive experience with the Gen 1 R1T I had no concerns about immediately taking this one into the hinterlands right out of the gate and so far, so good.
Photos below. Old on the left, new on the right on trade-in day at the Minneapolis service center. (I'm talking about the trucks here, obviously...)
The hinterlands (MN/SD boarder area). She's not a pavement princess. It's an adventure vehicle.....
