How does the trade-in process work? I have an offer from Rivian for my Tesla Model S but I would like to know when in the process this offer is 100% locked in. I presume Rivian will do an inspection at some point... Do they inspect it on the day I pick up my Rivian? If they see something which lowers the trade-in value can I back out of the deal at that point?

(Did a search and couldn't find the answer to this. Apologies if it is out there already)

Inspections are pretty much done by the photos you send in, from my experience. I handed the keys and title, was handed my plates and I was on my way in the new vehicle.

My experience was the same as @captainjp. They checked my odometer, then took the keys and that was it.

Process is as described above, the only additional thing was/being limited to 500 miles from the date of the quote. So if you drive a lot, be very aware of how many additional miles you put on your car prior to trading it in.

Quote is valid 1,000 miles or 30 days (shown when they provide the trade-in quote).

Also, same experience as the others for my trade-in back in 2023. Inspection was via the pre-purchase photos - only odometer reading was checked on pick-up day.

Pretty much summed up here. The inspection is done via photos. When I traded in my Nissan Frontier, once I got to the Rivian center, that was the last I saw of it.

It's DIFFERENT than if you use a car dealership where they will look for every frickin nit to knock do the value. Once you get your quote from Rivian and submit your photos, it's done. No BS.

I second all the above comments. A breath of fresh air to deal with. I even made a mistake on the mileage (forgot a zero) early on the the process was ironed out in a day.

I traded in an S last month. I drove it into the Rivian parking lot and they never looked at it. I wasted a $75 wash and wax to impress them. :)

What are the specs on your S and what did they offer on trade-in if you don't mind sharing?

Hand them the keys and the title (if applicable). The final trade-in offer ...usally the same as the initial offer, is made after you submit photos and follow all steps. Note that the offer is good for 30 days or 1,000 miles (whichever occurs first)....if the offer lapses or you put on over 1,000 miles they may need to pull an updated trade offer.

Other than that it was really easy and Rivian's offer was very competitive.

My experience was very similar to what was said above. I traded in my Model Y about 2 months ago. Provide pics, fill out some online docs and submit whatever money you need to. I was relatively ok with the trade-in value they offered for my 2023 MYLR with 25K miles. I also had some mods on there like suspension and they were ok with trading it in as is. That was not the case with other car brands. I drove up to the Rivian service center and checked-in. Within 5 min my guide was checking out my car and verified the mileage and to "just make sure I hadn't driven into a tree or something since I took my pictures". Wiped the Tesla clean, got my plates and then setup the Rivian. All in I was in and out within 30min. By far the best experience I've had and my truck was at 91% SOC which is more than I can say when I picked up my Tesla from the Fremont plant (40% SOC).
