Thuren Fabrication wheels with Nokian Hakkapeliitta R5 winter tires.

I live in the northwest NJ hills. We run about 10F cooler vs closer to NYC in the lowlands. And we can get a good bit of snow. Both my wife and I are physicians, so getting us both to work through the snow always fell on my shoulders. We always had dedicated winter tires and rims for our vehicles often using Blizzaks. So when I ordered the R1S in 9/19 (delivered 3/23), I got the 22” rims and planned on getting a set of 20” rims for winter tires. I always liked the Thuren look for its understated ruggedness. So when they put their series 1 rims on sale, I pulled the trigger.

I then ordered Nokian Hakkapeliitta R5 SUV 275/60 R20 from Tire Rack. They have the same revolutions per mile as my OEM Pirelli 275/50 R22. Don Thuren was a real pleasure to deal with. He answered questions promptly and really went above and beyond to get me what I wanted. It is a rare pleasure to find someone so customer oriented.

I got them mounted last week and propped them up on the vehicle. No need to install them now, hopefully. Flat black color. I am not an aesthetics guy. Function over form for me. But I do like the look….a lot.

I went with the Nokian as well. They were great this winter here in Canada. I went with wheels that look like the rivian oem 20” wheels.

Love Thuren’s thinking behind barrel width and offset. Shows their knowledge/experience in off-roading. The cost and weight though…

Love those Nokian Hakkapeliitta R5 SUV 275/60 R20 as well, especially in the snowy San Juan Mtns. Range penalty is minimal compared to 22" OEM All Season.

Looks good. I went with the Cross climates on my Model Y. Need to figure out what to do on the R1S. The CCs were great in the Truckee snow, not noisy on the road and don’t seem to affect range at all!

It's a nice tire but it tends to suck up little rocks into the tiny channels in the structure of the tire, which also tears them up a little bit. Buy a tire hook to get them out.

BTW, since you can now reprogram your tire sizes without visiting a service center, I would set them to 275/55 R21. It's only 0.2% off from your tire, rather than 0.5%.

Good advice. I usually install the winter tires about mid October. I hope I remember to make the change. I bought an XL tire cover off of Amazon and some one suggested putting kids heavy duty snow saucers on the top and bottom of the stack to keep the critters out. Got those from Amazon as well.

I went with the Nokian Hakka R5s as well after discovering that the Pirelli Scorpions are actually “3 Season” tires. Lousy snow grip on my steep paved driveway. The R5s behaved perfectly this past snowy winter here in PA.
