Thule Easyfold Bike Hitch -- suggestions to protect the gate?

I recently tried the Thule EasyFold XT 2 bike hitch. Works pretty well for the R1T. It does not fold down far enough to open the gate completely. But it clears the gate during driving and is very easy to hook up and use. I was thinking of making something to just attach to the gate during use, so if I need to use the gate, it can protect the area where the hitch is. See pics below and let me know if you have any suggestions to protect the gate (if even needed). The pic with the small suitcase looking this is the hitch folded up and in storage. That is why I love this thing. Hope this helps someone.

Maybe. But after using it a lot, I found that I don't need to get into the bed that much. I use the gear tunnel a lot. . I didn't want to use another piece of equipment with an extender. However, If I were to get an extender, I would be one that swings to the side so I can load things easier.

2 inch drop and 7 inch extension, the Thule T2 Classic works great!
