The Verge - 1/14/25

The Biden administration finalized a new rule that would effectively ban all Chinese vehicles from the US under the auspices of blocking the “sale or import” of connected vehicle software from “countries of concern.” The rule could have wide-ranging effects on big automakers, like Ford and GM, as well as smaller manufacturers like Polestar — and even companies that don’t produce cars, like Waymo.

The rule covers everything that connects a vehicle to the outside world, such as Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, cellular, and satellite components. It also addresses concerns that technology like cameras, sensors, and onboard computers could be exploited by foreign adversaries to collect sensitive data about US citizens and infrastructure. And it would ban China from testing its self-driving cars on US soil.
...
The rules for prohibited software go into effect for model year 2027 vehicles, while the ban on hardware from China waits until model year 2030 vehicles. According to Reuters, the rules were updated from the original proposal to exempt vehicles weighing over 10,000 pounds, which would allow companies like BYD to continue to assemble electric buses in California.

This is a good idea. It's no secret China hasn't been honest with us on their true intentions. They have made it clear by words and actions that they consider us an adversary. We need to do the same and safeguard our data.

Potential security risk is real, and unfortunate. Drive well.

It's a good move and a necessary move. With connected cars in a war like scenario they could easily brick all cars. The data is also concerning for people who work in sensitive places as movement can be tracked to target individuals to bribe for leaking data. I recall fitness trackers worn by military personnel and social media posts were leaking base/battlefield positions in Iraq so connected cars would be that much worse not on the battlefield obviously but for mapping secret facilities with all their cameras.

This doesn't necessarily block Chinese cars, they just need to make sure their servers and data stay in a country that is our ally and not accessible to the Chinese military.

You make some good points as to the tactical applications of this location data.

The CCP treats every company as an extension of the party, so it makes sense that the US would treat them that way as well.

Agree... and connected cars could also be used for more subtle subversion. In a "dezinformatsiya" scenario that is combined with other efforts, just randomly and temporarily disabling vehicles, and making it appear that it was some other entity that hacked it, would create enough FUD and turmoil in the public and government to distract from other things taking place in the US or around the world. If you have watched Netflix "The Diplomat", consider that type of scenario.

It sounds like this cover vehicles, components, and software? I wonder how much of the Rivian supply chain, if any, is affected by this.

If Polesters are the same quality of the Volvo XC30 (we had), they should be banned. That vehicle was the worse piece of trash we ever owned. Within 2 weeks it was in the shop to replace the tCAM. Then 2 months to the day, it was again in the shop to replace the same thing.

I drove it to work (145 miles one way). I barely made it to work on a 100% charge. I would regularly had to stop at a EA charger for 10 mins. to put some juice in.

I admittedly will admit that my wife and I didn't do our research before getting one. We had it for 10 months before we sold it back to the dealer and used that money as a downpayment for our R1T.
