Not really. I pre-conditioned the R1S for 30 minutes before departure and it was low to mid 50's outside so it wouldn't take much energy to maintain temp with the sun load during the day.
Cool story. You should actually test it. The results may surprise you. I've done this many times.

Adding another datapoint to the thread:

- 100 mile highway round trip yesterday with speeds between 55-75mph and ambient temps in the mid 60's to low 70's which should be nearly ideal temps (yes, climate was on and set to 72)
- Left at 84% and returned with 49% so consumed 35% for those 100 miles
- 35% x 109 kwh = 38.1 kwh = 2.62 mi/kwh

So generally better, especially considering the higher travel speeds and there were five of us in the R1S. Favorable temps helped I'm sure, was in standard ride height instead of low as it was getting very bouncy in the third row on low. Maybe I'll be nearer 3 mi/kwh as it continues to warm up. But it's still a pretty decent efficiency gap with the Dual Large on 22" all seasons vs. the Cybertruck AWD on all-terrains which is just a hair over 3 mi/kwh in these temps. Theoretically, the R1S is more aerodynamic. And the tires should be more efficient on the Rivian. Just figured the two would be running neck and neck on efficiency with the R1S bettering the Cybertruck based on EPA results. Just goes to show that all EPA numbers are not created equal.

Took a 70 mile trip today, charged up to 85% then pre-conditioned for 30+ minutes on a Level 2 before heading off. Flat terrain, 22" Sport Brights, 50-51psi all around, <1,000 miles on the vehicle, All Purpose in either Low or Standard ride height (shifted to Low halfway through), 50-55 degrees ambient temps and about 1:45 travel time. Typical speeds were 35-55mph but tended towards the lower end which should have been near ideal conditions for a high-efficiency run. Real world? Not so much. Very disappointed in the Dual "Large"

How are others faring? I can't even imagine what range would be at highway speeds.
This is what Microsoft Copilot says when I asked about your pre-conditioning of the battery:

No, it is not possible to pre-condition the battery in a Rivian by just plugging it into a Level 2 charger.

Thanks Clippy!

Figured if nothing else pre-conditioning the vehicle would at least reduce the energy needed during travel as maintaining cabin temps should be more efficient that first attaining those cabin temps with any differential to ambient.

As for why Rivian doesn't pre-condition the battery with the cabin on Level 2, that's a curiousity. My Teslas will all pre-condition the battery and cabin together when on shore power, nothing special to do.

Here you go…I make this 20 minute drive every day. 52-54 degrees, battery at 72, no climate control on outside of heated seats and steering wheel. Last minute of drive was in a parking lot.

If that's a round trip (no net elevation gain/loss) that's much, much better than what I'm averaging. I can see 15 min spurts like that going a steady 25-35 mph slightly downhill, but that's not a steady state efficiency in my experience. If you're seeing that all the time that's impressive.

Return trip ended up at 3.57 mi/kwh and battery temp at 70 F. Not much traffic so pretty relaxed driving.

Thanks for sharing. Would love to average even 3 mi/kwh out of my Dual Large!

Turn off hvac and see if that makes a noticeable difference.
Will give it a go, figured the Gen 2 with the fabled heat pump would have similar climate impacts on efficiency as Teslas but maybe Rivians heat pump isn't very good. It makes a hell of a racket, sounds like a combustion vehicle when it's running.

I cannot tell any difference between my gen 1 and gen 2 efficiency with climate on.

I just got 3.24 mi/kwh on an 18 mile drive speeds ranging from 35-75 mph but average speeds off 60 mph with the AC and cooled seats on.

Yes and no. Tri and quad are new in house motors. The Dual motor has always been enduro. It was only G1 quad that had bosch
Is there a problem with the Bosch motors?
