More content of RJ, this time with iJustine at SXSW. A lot of the same talking points if you've watched other interviews with RJ, but still an interesting watch especially because she lets him talk. A few interesting highlights to me personally:
  • RJ talks autonomy, but asks if Justine has a Gen 1 or Gen 2. Way to rub it in to Gen 1 owners!
  • The story about the holiday party, having kids run around, and RJ knowing in his head there's only a week and half of payroll left.
  • This is probably the first time I've heard RJ verbally say something about R4 and R5, even if it was in brief mention.

Man, I don't know. I feel like these 'summaries' are longer than the video!

Nothing substantial. Here's the timestamp of the mention:

Again, it was just a brief mention.

RJ is a total stud.

One amazing moment was when Justine related her experience about driving her Cyber Truck and having people chastise her buying into a brand owned by a controversial owner. She went on to ask RJ to comment on that and he goes on to describe how he believes he wants more EV in the market and that is necessary for Rivian’s success. Then goes on to address how Rivian focuses on embracing our differences and focusing on unifying around making the world better for our kids. Love that!

Guilty of not watching the video. But the first summary included this: "Service Infrastructure & Tesla Partnership".

Partnership? In todays climate, did RJ actually characterize Tesla opening up charging to Rivian and others as a partnership?

Thanks! I just noticed that the numbers seem to correlate to smaller and smaller vehicles (R1 > R2 > R3). Of course they don’t have to follow that ethos, just like Kia’s numbering system is all over the place.

I think if the R2 is successful I could see them doing an R2T. Small EV pickup trucks are an untapped market Canoo was trying to fulfill before they went bankrupt and now Telo is taking up the mantle.

I could also see the R4 as a sedan and the R5 as a subcompact hatchback (appealing more to European and Asian markets). Although I’d love a subcompact hatchback here in the US. I miss my Honda Fit.

Not at all. He described the EV market today as having 8% market share and in order to grow the share Rivians needs all EV makers to succeed. He said the idea that there can only be one winner or only a handful of winners is not how he sees it. He wants more EV startups and more EVs for different use cases from the traditional automakers.
Rivian has staked out its claim for the adventure market, but there are so many use cases to solve for…

Thank you; that is what I suspected and why I didn't watch the video. Your summary is indicative of how RJ has always characterized the situation.

It's shocking that the any AI summary would need editing isn't it? But people keep generating, posting and using AI content for reference - without editing for facts. That will no doubt get much worse before it gets better.

Yah I got a little cross-eyed half way through.

Cautionary side note to R2 reservation holders, especially those counting on the $45k base trim, don't expect it to be the first trim produced. Automakers follow strategy of back-casting, designing/engineering for highest trim then de-content to create lower trims. High trim not only has higher profit margin, it is also preferred by more buyers, and will almost always be prioritized until additional/excess production capacity is available.
