Hey folks! Just took delivery of my R1T yesterday, and I can't figure out how to turn off the truck if I just want to sit in (or near!) it, but not have it using energy.

Thanks!

Congrats! You'll love it. I'm guessing Camp Mode will be your friend for what you describe - with screens off it won't use much juice at all. If you're only sitting there for an hour or so (while a child has an activity), I wouldn't even bother - it won't use enough energy to be noticeable. Try it the next time - take a photo of the energy screen when you start and another when you end.

Thanks! We're used to having an "off" switch with our Prologue, and it just seems wrong to not turn off the vehicle. I'm sure we will get used to it (like one pedal driving) and it will become the new normal!

You probably will - I didn’t like it at first, but now I really like it. But now I keep forgetting to turn off my rental cars!

One other note...The Rivian will put itself into park if you open the driver door while it's in Drive. Just get used to putting it in park yourself by pushing the button at the end of the right stalk. A friend of mine had a Mercedes that did the same thing and he got in the habit of opening the door to put it in park. He tried that with his wife's Outback and it started rolling away while he was getting out of the car!

As others have said, you don't need to. Personally, when I park and stay in the truck I turn off the headlights right away (rather than waiting for them to timeout) and turn off the interior lights if I don't need them on. Super quick for both. But nothing else.

I don't like start/stop buttons in an EV. They serve no purpose IMHO. Now that we have an R1S I keep forgetting to turn off our Ioniq 5. Luckily it makes a noise if I exit the vehicle and forgot to turn it off.

I have the same issue with our Toyota Hybrid Hylander it is quiet when I stop and I forget to turn it off. It does not make any noise when I forget. I guess that is a reason to just get another Rivian or a Lucid Gravity then both will be the same and turn off by themselves.

Stupid answer - you don’t! Even dumber, there’s no way to turn it on either. So if you have the doors open for a while because you're cleaning, camping, etc., the vehicle will randomly turn off on you after 10 minutes and the only way to turn it back on is to close and open a door. Music settings reset of course.

As you can tell, I'm not a fan, but there are gripes about any vehicle.

Don't worry the amount of energy that it uses when you just sitting there. That was definitely a mental adjustment I had to make when switching to Rivian.

You'd have to be sitting there for a couple of hours with the AC running to use even 1% of your battery. The motors use way, way more energy than anything else in the vehicle, and the battery is sized as such

I'm still amazed that other EVs have on/off button. It's not intuitive for an EV.
Now on the other hand, don't get me started on PAAK, key card, and waking up. The R1 can never be a get away vehicle- too slow to get in and make ready, and go.

Agreed! I totally understand, and share, the "don't waste energy" attitude. Nothing wrong with that. If your concern is based on a general avoidance of waste, the guidance regarding camp mode is great! But if you're concerned about drawing down the battery charge, don't worry about it unless you're dangerously low on range. Some rough, straightforward numbers: Gen 1, Large batter has about 130 kWh useable. That means a 1 kW load can be run for about 130 hours. A typical home space heater or window-mounted air conditioner draws about that much power. If you're just sitting there with the heat or AC on, your impact on stored energy will be insignificant. And if you're not running climate control and the display screens are all that's on, your energy useage will be about the same as the "vampire drain" that you'll get by locking up and walking away. There really is no need to turn the vehicle off, from an energy perspective, since off and on are so similar! Yeah, it's a weird new way of thinking about your vehicle! (In the same mode: don't be afraid to pre-warm or pre-cool the cabin when you're away from the vehicle. The phone app lets you do that. It is so nice to be able to head to a parking lot knowing my truck cabin will be comfortable when I get there but won't be sitting in a cloud of exhaust fumes!)

Good post overall, but this part isn't really right. Rivians burn a lot of energy when they're on even without climate control. If you keep it in camp mode without climate control you'll probably lose 10%+ per day, which is unbelievably high for just keeping screens on, similar to my entire house's total use on a nice day.
