I learned that there will be some shared colors between the R1 and the R2. Also there will be some new colors for the R2. And there will be less color options on the R2 than the R1. There may be some other new info I did not catch.

AI Summary:

šŸŽØ Insight into R2 Color Strategy

Jeff Hammoud details a thoughtful approach to color design for the Rivian R2, one that balances brand identity, manufacturing efficiency, and customer appeal:
  • 🧩 Shared & Unique Palette: Some neutral tones from the R1 will carry over to maintain visual cohesion across Rivian’s lineup. These are likely hues that have proven popular and versatile across driving environments.
  • 🌈 Exclusive Colors for R2: Rivian plans to introduce unique colors specific to the R2, allowing it to stand out as a fresh product and speak directly to a potentially broader audience. This diversification caters to new buyers while staying rooted in Rivian’s adventurous spirit.
  • 🧮 Streamlined Customization: Because R2 is designed for scale and direct-to-consumer distribution, the color options will be more limited than R1’s. The goal is to simplify production while still offering enough variety to satisfy diverse tastes.
  • šŸ›  Functional Simplicity for Scalability: The design team made strategic decisions to reduce build complexity by trimming the color choices, which aids in scaling up production and keeping costs down—without sacrificing customer satisfaction.
  • šŸ’” Learning from R1: The selection process for R2’s colors draws directly from customer feedback and data collected from R1’s performance in the market. This ensures that the chosen hues resonate with both existing fans and newcomers.

Overall Summary

  • šŸš— R2 as Rivian's ā€œSecond Albumā€: Jeff Hammoud describes the R2 as Rivian’s ā€œsecond beatā€ — a more compact, affordable evolution of the R1 that maintains brand identity while expanding reach, including to Europe.
  • ⚔ Performance & Engineering: With an estimated 0–60 mph in 3 seconds and over 300 miles of range, the R2 is engineered for both power and efficiency. Its architecture is influenced by learnings from the R1, enhancing functionality while reducing cost and build complexity.
  • šŸž Dual Personality in Design: The R2 retains Rivian’s signature blend of off-road and on-road capability. It features 32ā€ tires and high ground clearance, signaling ruggedness within a mid-size SUV package.
  • šŸŽØ Design Customization: Though R2 will share some neutral colors with R1, it introduces unique hues exclusive to this model. Wheel and tire options will vary to suit both urban and adventurous users.
  • šŸ— Manufacturing Plans: Initially produced in Illinois, the R2 will later be built in Georgia alongside the R3. Rivian emphasizes production design continuity between concept and final model.
  • šŸ’” Cost-Saving Innovations: R2 integrates cost-effective design choices—like removing the division bar in the rear window for a cleaner look—without sacrificing aesthetics or function.
  • 🧠 Customer-Centric Features: Inspired by user feedback, R2 adds features such as dual glove boxes and a rear window that drops down, showing Rivian's dedication to customer-driven improvements.
Insights Based on Numbers

  • ā± 0–60 mph in 3 seconds: Puts the R2 among top performers in the EV SUV market.
  • šŸ”‹ 300+ miles range: Makes R2 competitive for long-distance EV travel.
  • šŸ›ž 32-inch tires: Indicate serious off-road readiness in a mid-size SUV form.

Leasing Tesla Model 3 until Rivian R3X comes out.
I saw this video! I started a thread about Rivian’s new color palette a week or so ago. This is interesting news.

The R1s currently have 9 exterior colors and 3 interior colors, not including the limited run California Dune with Sandstone two-tone interior.

I could see Rivian reducing the exterior colors to 5-6 and interior colors to 2 for the R2, just like Tesla. Probably similar exterior colors as well (black, white, gray and/or silver, red, and blue), but I’m hoping for a green.

The R2 is Rivian’s first mass-produced model and they want to keep things simple as they ramp up. Then when things get going they can release limited edition colors to keep the momentum going.

Will never miss an opportunity to mention how much I love my Forest Edge interior. Looks great, even two years later.

Did we ever see any official sales numbers on the 'take rate' for this color? I guess it was low, since they discontinued it, but damn does it look so much better than boring black/white/gray. šŸ’š

They mentioned the R3. Has Trump taken back the loan for the Georgia factory?

My understanding is that the loan isn't drawn down until certain goals are met - e.g., "complete construction phase 1" = "receive phase 1 of the money". And so on.

Outside any official announcement, I don't think we'll know if they've clawed back the money or not until Rivian tries to access it. 🤷

Federal loan agreements are more difficult to claw back too, since they have term sheets, etc. As someone who works in federal contracting though, everything sucks right now basically and who knows.

I don’t think he can do that. It was passed by Congress. It’s just on hold for investigation. There’s no point in harming an American company.

That sounds awesome. What color of wood does that have? Hopefully they do a limited edition again. I’m a big fan of green.

I'm really excited for Rivian and this next step. I can't wait for R2 and R3. They have such a great brand and they deserve the success. Just hope what's going on in the world right now doesn't screw it all up for them.

When I went to pick up my R1S (Forest Green with Ocean Coast) it was the first time I saw the Forest Green interior. Looked amazing and I had some regrets that I didn't get it, but when I initially configured my car that color hadn't been released and I had my heart set on OC. Definitely would have picked it for the R2. Too bad it didn't make it.

Bring back compass yellow!

Forest Edge is an amazing and unique interior. I absolutely loved it when I had mine.
