Unfortunately, lithium containing automotive batteries still appear as “Rube Goldberg” designs that will NEVER be cost competitive, primarily due to expensive manufacturing design. This could be overcome by talented design professionals that apparently have yet to be identified. In my experience they exist, which means managements have no interest in looking, perhaps because of all that government and low interest bank largess finding its way to their pockets.

I'm sure this is not intended to mean what it says. All BEV manufactured in the last 5 (?) years use lithium containing batteries...

Unfortunately, on the cusp of 2021, we're a few years away from solid state batteries in auto applications. Toyota promised solid state batteries for the cancelled 2020 Olympic Games though they were promised for vehicles to ferry folks around, not for retail sales. Maybe we'll see them for the 2021 Games, if they're not cancelled. Quantum Scape, backed by VW, says 2024 for retail sales.

With Toyota (in partnership with Panasonic) and VW, two of the world's largest auto firms, backing solid state batteries, they might have a good chance of getting to market sooner rather than later.

Yes but they are more like three years out than 5 as the title of this thread suggests. Of course something may happen between now and 2024.
