I heard from customer support person today that the compact spare will be available "very" soon. Is that better than just soon? :)

I'm going to preface this by saying "I'm a special kind of dumb"

I have no spare. Has it stopped me from doing things? Heck no! But I did do a road trip from downtown Vancouver, BC up past Whistler to Lillooet Lake (Lil-OO-et) to a forest service road that runs the length of the lake as well as Harrison Lake to the south. The FSR is roughly 200km of dirt roads with some loose shale, blasted rock, etc. Normally, no big deal, and a fun time! However, I didn't have a spare, and I took my wife and 2 month old daughter with me.

Now, we had plenty of food etc with us for the day trip as well as extras and a tent, should it require us to stop overnight. While we were a convoy of one, there were several vehicles and First Nations communities passed along the way, including several Dodge Rams (potential Rivian spare tire source vehicle) but, looking back on it, I was stupid for doing a trip like that with our young daughter and no spare tire.

Dear Rivian, please let my purchase the spare I configured several years ago so I don't continue down the path of "that guy"

Didn't take a photo of the truck driving, so I edited one with my extensive Photoshop (paint) skills.

So i did just get a call back from the manager of the Colorado SC and he apologized to me and also said he spoke with the person I 'made the deal' with and he apologized as well. The CO SC got their wrist slapped by corporate for helping people like me out and they're specifically not allowed to do that any more. I asked how I can get in touch with the corpos at Rivian to impress upon them my anger and disappointment around this policy and he said he would definitely pass that on (but he didn't give me RJ's cel phone number or anything :CWL:).

FWIW I feel much better that I was able to speak with him and hear that they understand and are frustrated as well, and that they did try to help me out and were prevented from doing so.

The official stance is that corpo rivian wants to ensure that people who have had breakdowns are able to get new wheels/tires so they won't allow sale of single wheels & tires until there is sufficient stock to serve those people. Now, that sounds like complete BS to me, because i can buy 4 wheels and tires right now without a problem, so I don't know how Rivian can address that incongruity, and I doubt they will.

So, anyone in CO want to go in on an order of 4 20" AT Brights? (Or sell me one you no longer need?)

The guy at the SC said the biggest issue wasn't getting the wheels or tires, but the other tire changing components for the spare tire kit. This is the same guy I "made a deal with" so i guess take it with a grain of salt.
they should just come out and say that. i think many of us would take it and get those components from a 3rd party.

This is the annoying part. I couldn't buy a spare, but was allowed to buy a set of 4. Even my guide said this was a good way to go, and shouldn't have trouble selling the excess. So, 1 person can buy 4, but 4 people can't buy 1.

grrr...

HAHA You have me beat there! I have done about 8 off road trails, including 1 overnight either all by myself or with my 14 year old son. I suppose the farthest out we were was maybe 6-7 miles, but that's certainly more than I would want to walk! I did bring my handheld HAM radio as my potential lifeline, and I've gotten some sidewall repair stuff and a puncture kit, but this is just such a maddening problem to have for an expensive new truck!

I'm not gonna stop adventuring because of a lack of a spare tire, I'm just going to continue to have to add to the risks I have to take in doing so.

It's very frustrating. As an R1S owner, I don't think they'll ever sell me a full-size spare, only the inflatable donut spare. So regardless, I'll need to buy the wheel and tire elsewhere.

Relatedly, anyone the NYC area want to split up a set of 20" ATs?

If this gains traction and you get stuck at 3 then I’d possibly be a 4th. Live in San Diego but attending Mtn. West Overlanding show in CO in late Aug. Going & camping there with my R1S. Could make the deal then & there.

I don't actually care about the jack. I already got my own puck, bottle jack, torque wrench, and socket. I just need a dang wheel and tire!
Check out this thread, looks like a Ram 1500 wheel fits, you can probably get one pretty cheap to use as a spare.

For an R1S, @opnwide has some pictures in this thread how he has a full size spare in the back of his R1S for off-road trips.

Maybe these are not the best solutions but they appear to be simple solutions.

Yeah, kind of ridiculous to withhold spare tires from customers. If you buy 4 and split them, it's still more expensive than the original option that also included a jack. I'm likely going the Ram spare route... I never used my ZR2 'matching' spare so I'm not that concerned with the style matching.

I'd be interested in splitting a set of 4 road tires. Anyone?

Looks like they're not available at the moment, but keep watching this page....

https://rivian.com/gear-shop/p/full-size-spare-tire

Otherwise, in the meantime, EV1 has wheels and tires for the Rivian. Or could simply go buy a wheel/tire that fits. It's only a spare that hopefully you'll never need, but at least will prevent you from being stranded, even if it doesn't match. There are plenty of cheap options for wheels in the $300 range and tires in the $250 range. Check Tire Rack for options that will fit the Rivian.

Or find a used set online somewhere and then sell off the other three wheels as spares.

Plenty of options available.

The spike in frustration for me comes from already having “made a deal” with my SC to get a spare and I was just waiting for them to uphold their side of the bargain. I literally shook the guy’s hand at the service center and thanked him profusely for making that happen. It did not happen.
How I got mine is I got the contact number for the person who I did my delivery with at the service center and she set up the work order and service visit to have it installed. So my 2 cents are to get the # of someone at your local service center to have someone on the inside you can reach out to. Super frustrating otherwise to get anything besides what Rivian PR wants you to know or have.

just curious. Did you do this trip all in one go. Or, top up in Whistler or Pemby? Just curious because doing it in one go would be really pushing the range with AT’s.
