Slow DC fast charging

Wondering if anyone has had this issue. The last 5 attempts to dc fast charge, I have had a max kw of 65-80. I’ve tried EA, EV go and Shell recharge with 10-20% range on arrival. I have a service center appointment, but not for 3 weeks with a big trip planned for Labor Day weekend. Any advice would be appreciated.

Yes, the Rivian Adventure Network chargers at Barstow, Inyokern and Bishop are L3. My R1S has achieved up to 215 kW. If you use the Rivian nav, the vehicle recognizes that it's en route to a fast charger and it prepares the battery for arrival to optimize throughput. You can see the chargers and their current status in the mobile app on the charging tab.
I'm not a Rivian owner yet. Been waiting over 3 years.

But I've read often enough about fast charging not being optimized if you don't prepare the battery for arrival by using the Rivian navigation system.

So maybe your battery is too warm or too cold when you arrive to get the full 200+ kw rate.

Other than that, I think your service center appointment was the right thing to do.

I might have better advice if I actually had an R1T or S. :)

Even without preconditioning you should be able to get over 100 kw easy. Sounds like a truck issues unless all the charging stations were limited due to heat.

I just wrapped up a 2000 mile road trip and had similar issues with EA 350 kW chargers. What we ended up doing is sticking to the 150 kW chargers which were more reliable (in most cases) for a higher throughput. Also we used the nav to our next charging stop and not to our destination. This way our battery was always preconditioned.

We ran into a couple area, specifically in long driving days, where both 350 and 150 kW chargers would throttle to lower charging. The screen on the EA charger said it was the vehicle requesting the lower amount. My hypothesis is the battery stays very warm and the vehicle, R1S in our case, could not cool down enough to get into a happy place for fast DC charging.

At a recent EA charge stop, my R1T also displayed a message that said charging speed was limited by the charger. It was 90+ degrees outside, and all chargers at that station were throttling (based on chatting with other people trying to charge). Speeds were in the 50-80 range.

I've run across many EA stations that won't go above 72-80kw, regardless of the car's state of charge or preconditioning. Best bet is to check out chargers on your planned route in advance using PlugShare. Unfortunately, no access to the Supercharger network....yet.

That statement of what the vehicle is requesting at the charger shouldn't be trusted. The vehicle request gets downrated to match what the station says it is able to deliver. IE if the Rivian can accept 200kW at the time, and the station says it can only deliver 30kW, the Rivian is going to say "send me 30kW" (this is oversimplified for clarity). I believe you will never see the vehicle request more than the station can provide at any given time because of this.

I’ve done a lot of testing to make sure it wasn’t a charger or temperature issue but no luck. Luckily, Rivian took my trip into consideration and will get the vehicle in for the charging issue this week.
