Should I fly out to Normal (from Portland) to pick up my truck?

So, my guide tells me there is a truck for me in Normal, and they can ship it to Portland (of course) or (because I asked about this) he said I could fly to Normal and pick it up.

Part of me obviously wants to do this - ABRP puts the 2000 mile trip at 45 hours (inclusive of charging). I can fly out cheaply enough, so that's not a huge concern. And I think it'd be a very interesting experience to do the drive over Memorial Day weekend. Also, removes the "damaged in transit" risk.

That being said: I have never owned an EV let alone a first generation one, so part of me is concerned with getting stranded in BFE with a bricked rig. But, that's what tow trucks and credit cards are for i guess.

Would you do the trip? Why or why not?

DO IT.

and it doesn’t obviate the damaged in transit risk, say, if you meet Bambi on the road, or a truck tire tread, etc etc.

but…do it!

how often does one get factory pickup + road trip home??
if you stick to main routes, charging shouldn’t be an issue.

When my number gets pulled, I'll ask about Normal pickup at the factory.

That is what I am planning to do as well if they allow me to pick up in Normal. Would love to see the factory and go on the test track.

My guide was super clear, because of Covid you can't do the full factory experience. No test track, no real factory tour. You can come into the lobby, view the plant through the windows there, and "see a sea of R1's"

Still pretty cool though.

Would still fly out anyway as I would like to take the road trip back to central Oregon in my r1t

This is a hard no. Going on that long of a road trip without any experience in that particular EV or route is a recipe for disaster. You haven't had an EV before? That's a triple quadruple no. It's like getting used to swimming by jumping in a shark cage. Work up to it.

Enjoy having your beautiful car dropped off at your doorstep. It'll be lovely.

I don’t suppose you get a rain check on the “full factory experience“?

he said they are looking at putting on "homecoming" type events in the future where owners can come out and experience the full factory tour.

FWIW in non-COVID times all car manufacturers will give you a factory tour for free if you email nicely. You don't need to buy a car for that, it's standard practice as good marketing. You'd be surprised how little they actually care if you buy one of their cars, it doesn't really get you any more special treatment than being polite.

Who knows if/when that will resume, however.
