Yeah, that scares me a lot. As others have mentioned, what happens when you get a flat on a road trip that can't be plugged or patched? You have to wait for a tire to be shipped to wherever the heck you are? What an oddball (stupid) decision to go with a completely unique tire size!
Or maybe you can carry a spare. If you blow two tires while on a road trip you might want to re-examine your destination. The 21s will most likely be readily available at the Rivian service centers. If the 21s are sooooo expensive why does Rivian charge $1800 extra for the other options? Maybe Rivian designed extra longevity into the 21s knowing their uniqueness? The rugged terrain and tire challenging driving owners of the ATs will frequent could lead to greater failures of those tires compared to the 21s.

Not trying to bash the 21 haters, just some counter arguments.

Also for those who are wondering getting the $1,800 for 20" option is a massive steal.

$1800 for forged 20's is an amazing bargain + the off road tires that you could easily seller compared to the odd size of 21's. Even if you don't want the off road tires, the forged wheels + a eco 20" tire would be a way smarter move and probably a lot easier than unloading some 21's.
The Rivian website says,

20" All-Terrain Bright
$1,800
Machined aluminum wheel with high gloss black pockets

Same as all wheel/tire options. Sorry to disappoint the forged fans.

It is cheaper for the 21" R1T spare wheel/tire. $600 instead of $800. Probably because it isn't forged and therefore is cheaper to manufacture. The "compact spare" for the R1S is the same price no matter which wheel you option.
The ATs are machined aluminum. Same as all wheel/tire options.

Nope. Clearly stated as forged on the website. The lips are a Machined finish. That’s what they’re referring to.

Lol. Ok. I guess when they say FORGED 20” wheel they must mean something else.

There is a conflict between the configurator description and the performance section description. Time will clarify this.

"Machined" does not imply forged or cast. "Machined" is a downstream process that can be done on either cast or forged wheels.

Analogy - Pine and Oak are different types of wood. Both can be stained.

No there isn’t. Machining is a finishing process for wheels, and does not indicate any particular type of manufacturing.

FYI. Tire Rack finally has a price on the 21".

275/55R21

$383.75

Listed at 38 lbs vs 57 lbs for the 20"AT.

It's hard to find an LT in that size less than 57 lbs, but here is a possible replacement for those looking for an LT on the 20" that is more focused on road driving and efficiency. It is still heavy so it is unlikely to rival the 21".
Michelin Defender - listed at 53 lbs

You can verify with CS as I did, the 20s are forged and the 21/22s are "tilt cast/flow formed" so it is a hybrid between cast and forged

To dive a little deeper, a forged aluminum wheel (compared to simple cast aluminum wheel) is stronger in all areas due to the forging process aligning the grain of the metal and eliminating voids.

Tilt Cast/Flow Formed starts off as a simple cast aluminim wheel, and through heat and roller pressure, the rim area is reshaped and made stronger by the process, aligning the grain similiar to forging - but it's *not* forging. So the rim is stronger, but the hub is not. This type of wheel is great for the street, but not for serious track usage, for obvious reasons.

I concede. Was influenced by the identical wheel descriptions in the configurator. Seemed to me that one would would want a full and accurate wheel description in the configurator where one makes their wheel choice. Obviously it makes sense to have a stronger wheel in the ATs as more stresses are expected when off-roading.

From CS

All three 20” wheel options are indeed forged! The 21” and 22” wheels are, on the other hand tilt cast and flow formed. To clarify, the 21” wheel is the “road” wheel, but this does is necessarily specific to the tire. Both the 21” and 22” wheels have all season tires as standard, while the 20” option comes with heavier-duty all terrain tires.
