Oh why not.....Vancouver WA here......I think I'm in the wrong area but you guys seem like nice people. :turkey:

I have a Bronco on pre-order but now I'm thinking of looking long term, sustainability, eco friendly yet useful (to haul my dirt bikes) and adventurous.......like I said before, I think I'm in the wrong room but things look more interesting here.

Keep an eye on the rally starting ina. Couple of days. I think Ford is sending a couple Broncos and Rivian is sending 1 R1T. It may show some type of comparison between the 2 vehicles when going off road.

Cool!! I didn't know that......excellent!

I do know Fords got a hand here and I'm cool with that. I do like the new Bronco, just trying to think outside the box with R1T.

Got a knee jerk from the title but I'm calmed down after reading the thread. The PNW is lovely, no question about that but there was a reason for the knee jerk. Rain is indeed bad, bad, bad in terms of what it will do to your range in a BEV. It doesn't take much water on the road to knock 25% off usable range. That means your large battery model could lose 100 miles to it!
Well with a 300 mi battery pack I’ll be safe to get to the grocery store and back.

Checking in here from the PNW. Reservation in for a R1S and I’m excitedly awaiting the day when I get to drive a Rivian on our beautiful PNW roads! Clarification: the roads aren’t that great but the scenery is!
GoWest!,

Great news! I hear Oregon and Washington have earmarked some of the upcoming Federal Stimulus monies to regravel I-5, I-84, and I-90 after the mud dries this Summer! If all goes well, they may pave them in the next few years.

Let’s hope they don’t use the Tacoma Model TM and take thirty years.

I-5 between Woodburn and Salem was repaved, again, last year. I-5 north from Woodburn was repaved a few years earlier. The pavement would last much longer if studded tires were banned.

I live in Keizer and work in Hillsboro, so I have lots of experience driving that section of I-5.

Unfortunately, banning studded tires isn't likely to happen. Since they cause so much damage to roads, there should be a yearly fee to use them to help pay for the damage they cause.

If you can't tell, I HATE f-ing studded tires with a white hot burning passion.

And it seems that they still aren't done.....

My son works for Boeing, so I've driven up there numerous times. It has gotten better.

Eeyore,

I feel for you with that commute! I would HATE that f-ing drive/crawl with a white hot burning passion. I only hope you’re not in the thick of our lovely morning and afternoon anything-but-rush hours.

Regarding studded tires, I know it’s hard to believe, but I figured out your hatred even before I got to your fourth paragraph. ? You’re right though about the damage studs do to our roads. I recall a study years ago that said it took some huge number of vehicles with non-studded tires crossing a stretch of roadway to equal the damage caused by just one similar vehicle with studs. It was some 500 or 1,000 to one ratio. I’m sure someone here will know the actual number, but the ratio was stunning.

The modern snow tire, and by that, I mean actual Winter tires over All-Seasons, is made of rubber compounds that are such an improvement over yesteryears’ snow tires that the benefits of studs have shrunk. The tread technology is now vastly superior, as well. For those who think they need studs, perhaps a huge tax or permit is the way to go. In general, I’m not a fan of additional taxes, but the damage studs incur merits paying extra for that privilege.

Since we’re talking about deteriorating roadways, many other factors also come into play. Check out how little some big rigs pay for permits to cross bridges when overweight for those spans along their path. Many older Interstate spans were designed for a max of about 80,000 GVW or less, yet have rigs paying some tiny amount of extra fee to roll over those bridges with close to 50% more than their designed weight limit. I seem to recall it was as little as $12 per crossing. The amount of wear on those older structures by one very large truck was stated to be in the neighborhood of being equal to that of more than 20,000 automobiles or light trucks crossing that same structure. Before a trucker screams foul, I know they pay a bunch in gas taxes and other fees, I’m just saying the entire equation of funding roads needs to be looked at before long.

As much as I hate the thought of government-mandated tracking devices, and/or having a per-mile rate based on the weight of a vehicle, some variant will likely be here sooner than we think. Vehicles have become more efficient while remaining heavy, and gas tax-based revenues aren’t keeping up in the battle. Throw into that mix the EVs that pay no fuel tax, but weigh more than many comparable ICEmobiles, and things are going the wrong way. We know many states already have sizable licensing and extra fees for EVs, but I think it’s safe to say more are likely to be considered around the country.

No matter how we look at it, something has to change in many states to keep up with our infrastructure needs.

Sorry to drop the turd in the punch bowl.

I leave my house by 5:30, so unless there is a bad accident, the drive is pretty good. It takes 51 minutes to drive 47 miles.

Coming home at 5 is a different story. That usually means a drive in the country. That usually means a drive of 1 hour 10 minutes, but still faster than trying to take the "freeway".

I don't feel too bad about the drive. There are others at work that have shorter drives to work but longer drives home. Getting to Washington from Intel at 5 isn't an easy drive.
