Politicians will target competition for their big donors. I think that is what is going on here. Oil and gas hate EVs so donate to discourage competition.

You can thank all of the morons who voted for Republicans... the party of oil and gas.
They all know oil is toast long term, but the money is there to be made now. I think we'll see global demand start decreasing by 2030 to 2035. That's when the real fun starts!

Well, I guess I must be a Conservative moron with solar panels, EV cars, wash my Rivian in the rain using saved water from the gutters to rinse it, make one bag of garbage every 3 months, have a small garden that we compost in etc etc. But it feels good to be more self reliant among other things.

One nice thing is there are all kinds of people that make up the world and although generalization soothes our mind, it is not always true. That being said, I am still going to make an exception to generalization and agreeing with you in saying that whatever politician you have, they are most likely happy when more money comes their way.
It all depends on what issues matter to you the most.

I’m in favor of term limits for both houses of congress, all of the judiciary, and making the laws that apply to us also apply to congress.

49.8% is just a tad short of a majority. Just sayin'

M-W has a different definition.. I think that generally people think of majority as being greater than 50%. I will grant that the Republican party received a majority of the votes among the 3 parties on the national ballot.

Yawn.

Does anyone who can pay $100k for a new truck really care that it costs $1K more? I don't. Personally I think subsidizing cars for rich people with a $7.5k handout is much worse.

People who want an inexpensive EV for $30k care about $1000.

And that was less than half of the people voting, the turnout was only 63.9% of eligible voters. The real percentage cast for trump based on eligible was only 32%

It's the Chevy Blazers, Equinox and Mach-Es that are gonna get hurt.

Now if we could only have a tax on studded snow tires! Here in Oregon they're mostly driven on bare pavement. The worst are those folks that drive on them 12 months a year.

Yeah, but this is a Rivian forum, not a Tesla or Kia forum.

Personally I think roads should be paid for by the people who drive on them. Maybe one day there will be no taxes, just tolls.

Virginia adds an extra tax on fuel efficient cars to make up for lost gas tax revenue. It is higher depending on how much gas they think your car uses. They offer to track your mileage to more appropriately adjust how much you pay. I am not letting the government track my car, so I just pay the default tax. I hate it. And I would hate the $1k also.

I hate all taxes, and I hate all subsidies, because I hate what government does with it. What is the point of this thread again? To complain about government and taxes?

I posted this in another thread about EVs and road use fees/taxes, etc. It's about the stress on the road based on a few factors:

Regarding axle load and road stress (wear) check out the fourth power law.
2 ton car / 2 axles = 1 ton per axle
3 1/2 ton R1T / 2 axles = 1.75 ton per axle
The R1T has 1.75x the load per axle so we calculate stress: 1.75 * 1.75 * 1.75 * 1.75 = 9.37x more stress on the road than a 2 ton vehicle.
A 60k truck may spread its load over 5 axles, so 6 tons per axle which is 3.42x the R1T: 3.42 * 3.42 * 3.42 * 3.42 = 136.8x more load than the R1T, and there are 2.5x as many axles, so 342x more load than the R1T, and 1,296x more than a 2 ton vehicle.
Taxing purely based on weight and miles would put trucking out of business without some kind of change, and nobody wants to spend $20 to send someone a letter either. I think tying vehicle taxes to gasoline/diesel to recoup road costs needs an overhaul, but oversimplifying it would have some nasty ripple effects.
Note that I wrote this WRT the weight of the vehicle, not its source of fuel. I have only had one cup of coffee today so I am not sure what the gas/diesel tax is on each gallon, and how much each vehicle is paying per mile of road use. I agree that decoupling the tax on gas to better maintain the roads is a good idea, especially as manufacturers are pushed to make vehicles use less of it.

But also note that for a tax/fee structure to be perfectly efficient/accurate, there would need to be sensors on each vehicle to determine the weight and where you're driving - since each state may have its own fee structure. Taxes are annoying and almost always uneven, but their application/justification is rarely as simple as someone postulates in a few sentences since the ripples go so far.

A lot of people seem to forget that those same EVs get sold as used vehicles a lot. The tax credit effectively decreases the vehicle MSRP if everyone qualifies for it, so resale values will be based off of that number as well.
