Senate Republicans Propose $1000 Tax on Electric Vehicles to Fund Road Repair

But it's not just closing the flow of tax credits on these senators' minds. Going forward, EV owners would be charged a one-time $1000 fee at purchase under the proposed rules.

Senator Deb Fischer (R-NE) explained that this fee would recoup around 10 years' worth of federal gas tax revenue per car. Federal gas taxes, which were first imposed under the Hoover administration in 1932, are almost exclusively used to maintain and repair roads. The same is true for many states around the country — which poses a future funding problem for transportation agencies as EV adoption increases and gas tax revenue decreases.

"EVs can weigh up to three times as much as gas-powered cars, creating more wear and tear on our roads and bridges," Fischer said.

Texas already charges $200/yr for registration on EVs in lieu of the $70 for ICE vehicles with the excuse of not consuming fuel which has a Tax for road improvement purposes.

IMHO, seems logical and fair. I still save more than that in fuel alone by driving the Rivian (and my wife's model 3)

Setting aside if this is fair or not. It’s the EV assault that’s so awful to me.

There are around 50,000 early deaths per year in the US from vehicle emissions. Maybe they should be tripling the tax on ICE vehicles instead? It’s the Big rigs cause most road damage. Still the backwards EV assault goes on but nor in the rest of the world.

It's just politicians playing favorites again in exchange for campaign donations. If they wanted to be "fair" they'd just charge every vehicle sale the $1000 tax and eliminate the federal gas tax, or gasp, find an effective way to pay based on weight and distance.

All vehicles should pay the $1000 and then gas tax should be ended. It's an antiquated tax scheme that didn't scale with time. This is to suppress EV sales, so any discussion of modernizing the federal road use tax will not happen. The campaign contributions had strings attached and this is a big one.

Oregon is a VERY heavily Democrat state and for registration renewal:

Vehicle is all electric**$316

If you want to pay 2 cents per mile, you can pay a reduced registration renewal fee.

For just title and registration, expect to pay over $500. We paid over $800 2 years ago to the Oregon DMV when we purchased our new R1S. (although we did get custom plates thus the increased price).

So to be fair, it seems like the more revenue on whatever party you want to choose, the happier the politician.

WA is similar. $250 total I believe per EV. $75 is specifically for electrical infrastructure. We pay way more based on our mileage than we would in gas taxes.

Politicians will target competition for their big donors. I think that is what is going on here. Oil and gas hate EVs so donate to discourage competition.

You can thank all of the morons who voted for Republicans... the party of oil and gas.

Well, I guess I must be a Conservative moron with solar panels, EV cars, wash my Rivian in the rain using saved water from the gutters to rinse it, make one bag of garbage every 3 months, have a small garden that we compost in etc etc. But it feels good to be more self reliant among other things.

One nice thing is there are all kinds of people that make up the world and although generalization soothes our mind, it is not always true. That being said, I am still going to make an exception to generalization and agreeing with you in saying that whatever politician you have, they are most likely happy when more money comes their way.
