Noticed the steering wheel losing its range of tilt up again and progressive it’s dipping to cover the screen. So decided today why not let’s calibrate the steering wheel and drivers seat since both need to be done to set a new memory position. Well, bad idea. The drivers seat calibration stopped halfway through and kept on saying “it’s our error, try again” but got stuck again. Now the drivers seat won’t move back the last three or four inches of travel. I’m 6’2 so it’s a very tight fit not being able to move the seat back further.

Tried the following:
1) soft reset
2) hard reset
3 vehicle sleep cycle
4) checked under seat, nothing blocking.
5) tried the passenger seat. Full range forwards and backwards.
6) called Rivian who suggested the above which I had already done

Any suggestions?

TLDR - I ended up dropping it off at Costa Mesa, and they fixed it in one day. Debris along the seat rail (a screw) - I asked where the screw came from, and they thought it was leftover from a prior service (my car has had a lot of things fixed). Happy they got to it quickly and fixed it. Costa Mesa is a very good service center right now.

I noticed this issue recently, and recalibrated the steering wheel. It fixed my dip problem.

Regarding your seat, I'm at a loss. I went through all of the manuals, couldn't find anything that would resolve it.

Yeah this is quite a disaster. It’s drivable but I’m sitting uncomfortably close to the wheel and my legs are all crammed in there making one pedal driving awkward. How Rivian could even let this happen (seat cannot move full range even if memory is not set) is beyond me. It’s a safety hazard.

I assume you've checked under the seat and there are no loose connectors or frayed wires?

Yeah no cords amiss. The motors all work. The seat lifts up and down. The seat moves forwards and backwards. Backrest tilts forwards and backwards.

The issue as illustrated in the picture is that it can’t move to the last 3-4” of track. So the seat is stuck in a forward position, and my knees are close to the dashboard. Hitting the seat button just produces a click and no further backwards motion.

Calibration fails with the picture I posted above too. Tried all the resets and sleeps. And calibration still fails. As a result saved seat positions are gone and roomy exit is disabled (I never used it to begin with).

Right now I’m not sure it’s a software issue, or whether something broke on the track.

Filed a service request and was told someone from the service team would call me tomorrow to figure out whether we will do a mobile service or service center. I can’t keep this car out of the service center. Approximately one year of ownership and if I need to bring it in again, that’s service visit #10. I cannot imagine mainstream R2 buyers would put up with this level of unreliability.

There's a different way to run the calibration from the RIDE menu, I'd try that.

Related seat issue: My seat calibration "drifts" over time, progressively going further and further backwards until it won't go forward all the way anymore. It told me it needed calibration and then gave me the same "calibration failed" message recently. Service appt next Friday, we'll see what they can do.

OP, to clarify, this is the steering wheel recalibration I did that was successful. If this isn't your seat recalibration method, I recommend it.

Just don't be sitting in the seat when you do it, haha.

Checked the ride menu and it gives an option for full mechanical calibration including the charge door and windows in addition to both front seats and steering wheel. It’s all or nothing. I decided not to try it since with my luck one of the windows will be stuck not being able to fully roll up.

You don't have to run them all. Hit the deselect all button and then select just the seat you want. I just did this with 2 windows only in the wife's R1S.

Update. Was able to talk to Rivian on the phone and arranged to drop it off at Costa Mesa today. Their service is really improving and I’ll keep everyone updated on what they find with the mysterious stuck seat.

I wonder whether the seat calibration is tied to the driver such that switching or adding a new driver would calibrate differently. I appreciate you’ve likely dropped off the truck by now.

When the calibration failed, it erased the saved seat, mirror and steering wheel settings for both my profile and my wife’s profile.

Yes dropped it off at Costa Mesa and they were very kind to accommodate the same day appointment. Will keep you all posted.

Update - got the car back after one day. They found a screw stuck on the seat rail. Removed it and did the calibration and everything checks out. I asked where the screw came from - service manager thought it was left over from a prior service.

In the end, just happy to get the car back after just one day. Rivian service has definitely improved, and Costa Mesa is running on all eight cylind... errr.... all four enduro motors right now.
