1. Driver+ works well when available
The lack of availability is the biggest problem with Driver+

The appeal of Blue Cruise and Supercruise is they seem to have way better availability. I say seems as I don't have either, and I'm relying on things I've heard/read.

Now I wouldn't pay $75 a month for better availability. So for me the best feature of Driver+ and Tesla Autopilot is they come with the vehicle without monthly charges.

I prefer Driver+ over AP partly because it uses capacitive steering which is superior to a torque sensor in the steering wheel. This makes it so much more pleasurable than getting the silly hold the steering wheel message. It's also from my own experience where its less likely to phantom brake, and I've never had Driver+ recenter in a lane when another lane merges in. The Tesla would at a minimum get tricked a bit.

Now just because I prefer Driver+ doesn't mean I won't complain.
  • They promised us lane change assist but that never came to fruition.
  • They claimed it would be hands free, but there is no hands free. In fact they disabled the driver monitoring system claiming that it didn't even work. So there isn't even a path to hands free without a HW change.
  • Last Winter/Spring I was really disappointed by how often it would fall out of driver+ because of a little rain.
I don't think there is a perfect system.

There are just systems with their positives and negatives.

I got put in jail on my trip this weekend. Some turd was drifting into my lane and I hit the rumbly shoulder bars. Suddenly "system fault detected" and I had no cruise control for the next 2 hours of driving. Wasn't using highway assist, just the basic adaptive cruise. I'll continue to refuse to pay a monthly fee for half-baked assistance stuff.
When this happens can you pull off the highway, put it in Park, and then resume the drive out of jail? What has to happen to get out of jail?

The only problem I have with adaptive cruise control is in highway stop and go traffic. It needs to look farther down the road, because it waits too long to start braking from 60+ mph to a standstill.
Tesla is this way, too. It also takes too long (an unnatural amount of time) to resume speed when the traffic begins to move again.

Can someone provide an informed speculation on what this might cost? ...maybe extrapolate from the Tesla pricing model?
Without speculation on Rivian pricing, here is the Tesla features and pricing model for Autopilot (AP) Enhanced Autopilot (EAP) and Full Self-Driving "beta" (FSD). Text is directly from the Model Y Owner's Manual - Autopilot, I added cost.

Basic Autopilot includes Traffic-Aware Cruise Control and Autosteer. [Included with every Tesla.]
  • Traffic-Aware Cruise Control: Maintains your speed and an adjustable following distance from the vehicle in front of you, if there is one.
  • Autosteer: Maintains your speed and distance from a leading vehicle while also intelligently keeping Model Y in its lane.
Enhanced Autopilot includes additional features. Enhanced Autopilot Features are designed to further reduce driver workload and make common actions, such as changing lanes or parking, easier. [Upgrade: $6000.]
  • Auto Lane Change: Moves Model Y into an adjacent lane when you engage the turn signal and Autosteer is active.
  • Navigate on Autopilot: Actively guides Model Y from a highway’s on-ramp to off-ramp, including performing lane changes, navigating interchanges, automatically engaging the turn signal, and taking the correct exit.
  • Autopark: Parks Model Y, either parallel or perpendicularly.
  • Summon: Moves Model Y forward or backward, even while you’re outside the vehicle. This is useful for parking in tight parking spots.

Note that FSD pricing has increased over time and was as high as $15,000 recently until reduced to $12,000.

You should try it, like autopilot on my Tesla I only use it on the open road during a trip. In that use case it really does make the drive pretty relaxing.
It’s nice on long drives. I time it with low traffic flow..😎

When I went to the first drive event they hosted a year or two back. I specifically asked them if all future updates and enhancements for the self driving system would be included or if that was something I would have to pay for in the future. They told me Rivian sees those as safety features and Rivian will not put a price on safety. So no, there will not be any additional charges for the enhancement of the system driving system.

Well that didn’t last long. :(

You don't work for a large corporate company I take it? Also, they might have interpreted your questions about current driver + updates vs a paid "autonomous" version. They have been quite clear about their business model including all of the subscription items.

Overall I'm more than overjoyed with all of the "free" updates I have recoeved in 10 months of ownership. Vehicle is much improved from when bought and ot was best vehicle I had owned when I bought it.

So are you saying by working at a large corporation the difference departments aren’t in sync with one another? The CEO and the customer engagement team aren’t on the same page? Because I was more than clear when I asked the question regarding future updates for self driving (level 2 to level 5) at the event.

I’m also great full for the free updates and I’m looking forward to future ones.

No, offense taken. However there are so many variables in a large corporate structure. Employees don’t mean to be inaccurate but often don’t have the full knowledge or yes the Business plan changes.

They've been clear that they never intended anything beyond level 3, and even that was pushing it.

I will definitely give it try before it becomes something I might have to pay for. I love the idea of it, but I still don't trust the other lunatics on the road enough to let the truck take over. Who knows - I might like it.

if your highway has construction and the lane isn’t well painted, then it might be nerve inducing. Just make sure you stay attentive in those situations.

My daily commute is pretty much the opposite of that. I think they are on year 130 for the current construction project.
