I will correct my previous stance: I believe retrofit is possible, but will require wiring harness change as well. So difficult and expensive.

V2 covers are also on R1Ts in the shop. If you open up the description it will show which version cover is included. I definitely want a V2.

How many tries will it take them to get the PTC right?

Alternative take- this looks awesome and a much better design, so cool that rivian trucks are getting better so quickly.

The old one looked good on paper, too. Rivian's designs look good until they hit real world use. There will be a bunch of bugs with it that they will work out over time. Hopefully fewer than last time.

Based on past experience, that is fair. But obviously Rivian doesn’t want to be dogged forever by unsolved and ongoing warranty issues. So I’m willing to give the benefit of the doubt that once they TRIED multiple times to just put better lipstick (springs, lube, etc.) on the V1, V1.1, V1.2 PTC pigs… and it didn’t work… that they decided to get serious about a true re-engineering effort. Comments from Reddit (purportedly from an internal Rivian source) say that they seem to have abandoned the really elegant engineering idea of 9 slats (V1) that can stack in a small space (but that have to flawlessly and repeatedly detach and reattach themselves to do so). Instead sounds like Rivian has accepted the perhaps less elegant but more dependable engineering solution of 36 narrower but permanently interlocked slats that can roll into a (hopefully similar-sized) space. That should provide a more robust, dependable and hopefully quieter solution. Waiting to hear from someone here that has actual hands on experience to give us some real feedback and details, which may provide insight into the plausibly of retrofits.

I want Munro to buy another Rivian, just so I can watch the V2 Tonneau tear down.

I really hope it's made available for retrofits. What I do know is it requires 2 ECU modules, a new tailgate switch and the cover assembly. ALL R1T's with rails have the wiring available just missing the ECU's and hardware. My guess is retrofit will be $3,500-5K

You think they did the dual motors this time instead of an axel that can twist under torsion?

I do appreciate the new cover and wish it were an option to replace the initial covers. I'm not sure if three years qualifies as quick in my books.
