Background:
I had told my guide half jokingly that I'd even fly to Normal and drive my truck back to Oregon if that was what it was going to take to get one into my driveway asap. He said, he'd look into it - and then told we could make it work. I
Day 0:
I picked up my R1T at the factory today, and it was a great experience.
Originally was going to fly home to Portland from Europe then back to IL on Wednesday to take delivery. But, after I thought on it a bit it made much more sense to just fly right to Normal from Europe. I texted my guide on Saturday and told him all the 8 steps were done, and would it be possible to get the truck this afternoon. He said he wasn't sure, but he'd try. I landed at BMI and got a text that said not only could I get my truck this afternoon, but someone from the factory was on their way to pick me up. Now that's customer service.
Reid picked me up and took me back over the delivery center at the factory. As we drove across the staging lot I saw tons of R1Ts and two R1Ss (LA silver and Rivian Blue). We pulled up the delivery center and sitting right there was an LG/FE R1S. Reid wasn't sure if pictures were allowed, and I didn't want to get anyone in trouble after they had been so gracious moving up my date. However the rig was unlocked so they did open the doors for me and I got to peak inside (I just looked, didn't get in the vehicle at all). So gorgeous.
After that I moved inside, and another Delivery specialist (who's name I forgot because I'm a lameass) walked me through the truck, and helped me configure my phone etc. We were having one issue getting connectivity over WiFi, but after connecting to my phone's hot spot that seemed to be a problem with their network vs. my truck. All in all we spent just over an hour reviewing stuff and answering questions. She then took me out on a short test drive where I was able to finally do a proper launch (only because I'm a lameass I backed off at 50mph vs. taking it all the way to 60).
One thing that's great about being down here is there are R1Ts everywhere. I saw several driving from my hotel to best buy and back.
I don't have much to say on my impressions after driving around town a bit, as I'd just be repeating what almost everyone else has said. i will say though i am blown away by the audio. I am definitely not an audiophile but I love the sound system (first song randomly happened to be Feel it Still by Rundimental)
Tomorrow I'm going back to the factory early so they can show me around a bit - I won't be able to do a proper factory tour but can see the line from the lobby and then drive around the area a bit. Then I'll point the car west and try and bang out several hundred miles to start my trip to Oregon.
UPDATE:
This will be a mess as i am
on my phone using voice to text.
I got to stop by the factory this morning before I headed out of town. They let me walk around a catwalk above the factory floor where I could see parts of the R1 line as well as parts of the Amazon EDV line. Very cool indeed.
As for the drive itself it was fairly uneventful. I was able to cover about 635 miles in about 12 1/2 hours inclusive of charging stops. every charger I've used which have mostly been Electrify America worked flawlessly.
The only issue I was having had to do with the highway assist as part of driver plus it would intermittently throw up very ominous warnings and then shut itself off I put a call into service and they thought it was because of the rain and limited visibility from spray and what not which seems reasonable as that is sort of what happens with my Subaru and eyesight whenever it gets rainy or generally gross on the roads the issue is that rather than just saying hey we can't see the road Rivian throes of these warnings with words like system fault and the truck is stopping now so it's a little bit scary.
i've been trying to do pretty good about noting charging sessions and how long they take and how much power I get back as well as power consumption on the various legs it was interesting because early in the day I was getting about two whatever that is Miles per kilowatt hour or whatever and then in the last half of the day it was about 1.65 not sure what that's about might've been because it was raining more heavily it also got colder dropping from the mid 60s into the low 50s so maybe that explains it
I've attached a few screenshots of the statistics from different legs of the trip down below when I get home I'll crunch all the numbers for the whole trip and post that
