That is probably the vent for air pressure to escape when doors are being shut. Too restrictive, people will complain about doors being hard to shut (as we've seen in these forums from certain individuals). Size, with out trim and the valve, looks about right to me. I tried to find a picture of one from a different car but Google wasn't cooperating.Was going to reply the same as well. That's my inclination, but it does seem quite large; however, I'm not an expert in this area.
