CR's reviewer doesn't understand how one pedal drive works.

What do you guys think? I love my Rivian and think it's one of the best vehicles that I've owned.
It’s no surprise they weren’t near the top, but I’ll take my chances with Rivian vs the competition. They also were rated one of the “most loved” brands by their customers FWIW.

It certainly makes sense that a new manufacturer with limited service locations and long service appointment lines would be dinged by a consumer rating.

I’m 13 months in with my R1S and my experience has been no better or worse from a reliability standpoint than others cars I have purchased.

CR is a data point but their studies don't carry a lot of weight with me. They said hybrids are the most reliable and plug in hybrids are the least reliable. When confronted they say it's because all the plugin hybrids come from car makers that have poor reliability.

A lot of the "poor reliability" I feel is due to lack of education on how to use the product.

The only difference between hybrid and plug in hybrid is the ability to charge it. Except for vehicles like the Chevy volt, Caddy ELR, and soon to be released RAM charger. Those are actually EVs with a gas generator. Remember a lot of Rivian's customers are coming from ICE vehicles and says it's their first EV. The long wait times for service might also play a role.

With that said, the vehicles are solid and the quality of the service has been great.

Generally, the more technology you have in a vehicle, the lower the reliability will be and again I think a lot of it is people don't understand the technology and become frustrated with it. So when they get these surveys it's reflected as poor reliability.

I generally like Consumer Reports, but I learned long ago not to trust much of what they say about cars. Supposedly I still have a subscription, but I never got the car survey, so I certainly wasn't counted among the Rivian respondents. Those most likely to answer those surveys either have an axe to grind or they really love their vehicles...not a lot in between and the magazine's reviewers are not car people, or at least it sure comes off that way. It's very likely that a lot of the reliability score is tied to charging issues that were not vehicle related, but without seeing the raw data, one will never know. Supposedly non plugin hybrids scored better than plugin hybrids for the same and BEVs far worse. There's no reason for plugins to score worse when they're effectively the same vehicle with a slightly larger battery and a plug...so it's likely the act of charging is the direct link between lower reliability scores and higher. I still haven't had my R1T in for service, though I do have a couple small issues I should get dealt with at some point. They just haven't been enough of a problem to bother scheduling in almost a year.

Way back in the day of newspaper and dial phones I had heard about a thing called consumer reports.
