Rivian and the Volkswagen Group's joint venture now has a name and a launch date. Rivian and VW Group Technology, LLC—or, Rivian and Volkswagen Group Technologies, for short—kicks off Wednesday.

The EV startup and automotive juggernaut announced their intentions to make a deal in June. Now the tie-up is actually happening, and the companies have revealed some key details. One big one: Initially, Volkswagen said it would invest $5 billion into Rivian to leverage the startup's expertise in vehicle software and electrical architectures. Now that's up to $5.8 billion.

The venture will be jointly run by Rivian's Chief Software Officer, Wassym Bensaid, and Carsten Helbing, Volkswagen Group's CTO. They'll serve as co-CEOs. It'll be based in Palo Alto, California, to start. Three more sites are in development North America and Europe, the companies said on Tuesday.
As far as the Rivian stock goes the shorts have it and it will take an absolute ***** news to break lose! RJ selling stock has not helped.

FYI- I owned an R1T from Jan 2023 till last month! That's just two months short of 2 full years ownership and tons of updates under my belt. Did you even look at when I joined the forum and my post count? I'm not today's fresh tuna posting gripes hit and run fashion.

My jeep has been flawless so far, thanks for asking. But I don't understand what Jeep SW has to do with Rivian software being buggy? I never ever compared the two because there is no comparison. Rivian is a 100% SW based vehicle right from the drawing board. Jeep is a 1940 design that's had electronics added to it over time, but it's by far still a legacy vehicle. Back on topic.. almost every time a new Rivian SW update is released there are multiple posters here saying "it broke this, or it broke that".

Do your research before posting:
Early "10+ feature rich updates" killed owners air compressors, made vents go wonky, increased vampire drain, messed up saved seat positions, caused the charge port door to act like a guillotine blade, caused icons to disappear from the screen, made the A/C compressor scream like a banshee, caused the vehicle to stop L2 charging if the charge port was in the sun, etc.. and these thing are still happening today. There have been several post update hot fixes released immediately following updates to correct buggy code that couldn't even wait till the next monthly regular update. And now the topper.. a simple festive theme update was buggy enough to make the Fed issue an official software recall due to reduced exterior lighting caused by the buggy theme.

If you prefer to hide your head in the sand and pretend these things didn't happen and everything's great, Be my guest. but when someone posts regarding factual incidents, best to fact check before calling them "opinions".
Your comments about the bugs are overreacting, and that's why you're getting pushback. Most of those bugs and things that broke are minor. Every software company that iterates as fast as Rivian will have bugs. Regardless of those bugs, the software is still more capable than any legacy auto manufacturer.

If anyone needs to face the facts here, it's you. The second-largest automaker in the world sees enough value in the Rivian software stack to give them 5.8 billion dollars. That didn't happen for no reason. Before my R1T, my car was a 2021 Audi SQ5 Prestige. 85K dollar car, and the software was shit compared to my Rivian. Name one legacy manufacturer who's doing it better.

If you're interested in hanging around here to make mountains out of molehills, there might be a better use of your time. I cannot understand why you found the software bugs so off-putting in the Rivian if you think Jeeps are acceptable in that department. They are so far off they aren't even playing the same sport. Stop exaggerating, if the Rivian really was that terrible this forum seems like an odd choice of places to spend your time.

So far, the partnership is mainly software support. Rivian is using its software expertise to develop a new EV architecture to power up new SDV (software-defined) electric vehicles.

Rivian already uses the platform and software stack, which consists of seven control units. Volkswagen models typically have over 100 of these units. The next steps could involve a joint purchase, deepening the VW/ Rivian EV alliance.

I read the Autopian article analyzing the same news. It sounds like there could be some part sharing to reduce cost basis, which would really help Rivian.

What would be really interesting is if the "parts" being shared are the Enduro motors and inverter units built by Rivian.

Let's not forget that the R2 is being designed for the EU market as well, and Rivian is gaining a lot by a joint venture with a company that knows all about that market.
