One way to think about Rivian service growth is to look at Land Rover. That company sells about 100K units a year in the U.S. and has 188 dealers. I couldn't find Rivian's 2023 passenger vehicle production forecast, but I assume its in the 50K range.

I assume Rivian van sales are irrelevant to R1/R2 service location in a 3-5 year time frame.

Land Rover has good coverage in some higher population areas where Rivian is lacking.

Rivian will likely follow Tesla's and Land Rover's growth pattern because the demographics are similar: The Rivian Chicago center is looking busy. The next location is likely the North Shore. After that probably the western burbs.

People far from Porsche/Land Rover/Jaguar/Merc. dealerships will have an uncertain service future, of course. Can't buy a new Land Rover in Wyoming, even though that state is the Defender's natural habitat.

What may shift Rivian locations to a small degree is their true customer demographic. They are positioned 100% hipster adjacent granola millennial. But who is really buying the vehicles?

Anyone know the projected max production volumes for Normal and the new plant? Those figures match with other similar car manufacturers should give a good indication of Rivian service locations over the next 3-5 years.

Good reasoning. Normals max production, with the expansion, is 200k including EDV. Let’s assume 50k for EDVs (they only have to provide 100k over a multi year period to Amazon) that leaves 150k for R1 sales in US and Canada. So 40 service (and delivery) centers is still light. I have heard no formal 2023 production estimates but that will come up in the Q3 results call next month. I expect north of 50k.

Land rover had a leg up in the ford PAG days, being colocated with jaguar and volvo in lots of places.

Those volumes suggest to me that in two years Rivian will need to double their service centers. Assuming that supply chain is greatly improved by second half of next year. Considering the capital investment in Normal, three years to full production is entirely reasonable. That is exiting year 3 at a 150K annual run rate for R1.

The currently car seller boom must end with a bust. But perhaps the EV segment will be spared.

Perhaps all Land Rover dealers also sell Jaguar now. Tata has owned the brands long enough that there may even be some crossover in parts. But I have completely lost track of Jaguar.

i Think they’re all Jagua/Land Rover dealers now, since they’re JLR under Tata.

Oh, good. Only 13hrs drive to the closest service centre
Don't be foolish and waste your time when you could JUST pay the $10k tow bill.

Enclosed transport is much cheaper, about $2000 last time I sent a car from Calgary to here 😬

Stopped by the Franklin, TN service center yesterday to see how it was shaping up. Doesn't look quite ready to open but they are actively working on the lobby and exterior. Could see hoists in the back service area as they had a garage door open.

Hopefully soon.

Rivian R1T (one day)
In case anyone's interested, I've been able to find plans and permits for a bunch of Rivian service centers across the US. To be honest, I don't care enough to post each one of these individually so I'll list them all here and revive this deadish thread. Some of these may have already been posted, I'm just basing myself on the available info from the crowdsourced RAN map.

This is fantastic. I would love to see either of the NJ centers planned for Trenton and Edison. I see for the Rochester NY one it was approved in February so does that mean it could open this year?
